Two-time javelin Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra has opened up about his marriage to Himani Mor. The lovebirds tied the knot in a private ceremony in Shimla on January 16. “I knew her. She also belongs to a sports background. Her father and mother were kabaddi players. Her brothers were boxers and wrestlers. She herself was a tennis player, but after injuries, she focused more on her studies,” Chopra told Sports Today in an interaction.
The newlywed added that since they belong to a sports background, they had multiple opportunities to meet, eventually blossoming into love. “Aise hi family ka kahi milna hota tha kahi jagah pe, jaise unka hamari baat start hui thi dheere dheere phir aise laga ki haa. (We spoke casually as athletes. Then slowly, we fell in love),” he added.
On being asked how he managed to keep the wedding under wraps, Neeraj Chopra said, in contrast, many people knew. He also mentioned that their families knew about the relationship. “I had very little time. I had to start with training, too. I thought it would only be possible after the season. Inviting everyone (to the wedding) would have taken time,” shared Chopra, adding that he is hopeful of a “grand function soon with everyone invited” from his village.
Denying that people in his village may have been offended, he said, “No, no, people in my village understood. Whenever there is a function, the entire village is invited—be it my sister’s wedding or my return after winning the Tokyo Olympics. They know that whenever Himani and I are free, we will host the function.”
Taking a cue from his revelation, let’s understand how partners belonging to similar backgrounds may have a better understanding.

When couples belong to similar family setups and backgrounds, they already have an experience and understanding of the pros and cons and can encourage each other without miscommunication. “If the couple has mutual understanding and is willing to put effort into the relationship, it is possible to stay strong as a team and have a beautiful life post-marriage,” said Dr Sonal Anand, psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road.
With a sense of responsibility, adapting to changes becomes more effortless and doesn’t seem forced for many couples. “This helps in improving the overall quality of life. Adapting to this change with mindfulness can lead to better emotional stability. This enables a supportive environment where you can thrive,” said Dr Anand.
However, Dr Anand emphasised that at the end of the tunnel, couples, regardless of their family backgrounds, need open communication and trust for a successful relationship.
