What is the one thing common between Indians and Koreans, you ask? Their love for chai, or cha as the Koreans call it. But while desis love their masala chai, according to The Korean Mind: Understanding Contemporary Korean Culture by Boyé Lafayette De Mente, barley tea is among the most commonly served tea in Korea. In virtually all homes and restaurants, you can find it in place of water.
After tea drinking was introduced to the country by Buddhist monks from China, according to Lafayette, Koreans have since become cha connoisseurs, and their teas, more than being refreshments, are also seen as health drinks.

According to The Korea Herald, a leading English-language daily in Seoul, barley tea, known as bori-cha in Korean, is high in fibre and known for its hydrating effects.
Dr Swapna Priya, consultant dermatologist, CARE Hospitals, concurred with that assessment, saying that barley tea “is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can offer several potential benefits for the skin.”
“Enjoyed for its mild, nutty flavour, barley tea is often consumed hot or cold, and its taste can vary depending on the roasting process and brewing method,” explained Dr Priya. She also elaborated on the several benefits drinking bori-cha can have for one’s skin.
Barley tea contains antioxidants like polyphenols, which can help neutralise harmful free radicals in the body. Free radicals contribute to premature ageing and skin damage, and antioxidants can aid in maintaining healthy skin by reducing oxidative stress.
Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Barley tea is a hydrating beverage that can help keep the skin moisturised and may contribute to a more radiant complexion.

Barley tea is believed to have detoxifying properties that help eliminate toxins from the body. A detoxified body can lead to clearer skin and may contribute to an improved complexion.
Barley tea may have anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of compounds like lignans. Reduced inflammation can help in managing certain skin conditions, such as acne or redness.
A healthy digestive system is often reflected in the skin. Barley tea is known to support digestion and promote a healthy gut, potentially leading to better skin health.
However, while barley tea offers potential benefits for the skin, it’s important to remember that individual responses can vary. Maintaining a balanced diet, good hydration, and a proper skincare routine are key aspects of achieving and maintaining healthy skin. If you have specific skin concerns or conditions, consulting a dermatologist for personalised advice and recommendations is advisable.
