"Naturally, we all get slightly growing pores as we get older. It is normal to have pores and there is nothing wrong with it," said Dr Kiran Sethi, a dermatologist

The skin, which is the largest organ in the body, contains millions of pores — some of which may not be visible to the human eyes, while some may be enlarged. And though the latter can appear on any skin type, they are more common and visible among those with oily skin. But have you ever wondered what could be causing enlarged pores? Dr Kiran Sethi, a dermatologist took to Instagram to discuss enlarged pores and the reason behind them.

“All of these pores are open, allowing the skin to breathe. Each pore contains a hair follicle and sebaceous (oil) glands that make an oil called sebum. The sebaceous glands are most abundant in the pores on your face, back, chest, and groin. Hormones play a role in stimulating these glands in order to produce more quantities of sebum. That’s why the pores on your face, most specifically those on your nose, forehead, and cheeks, may appear larger than they do on other areas of your body,” she captioned her post.

Why do some people have enlarged pores?

According to Dr Monica Chahar, Chief Dermatologist & Director- Skin Décor, New Delhi, enlarged pores are a common skin concern that affects many individuals, and the cause can be attributed to a variety of factors.

“Genetics, hormonal imbalances, and excessive sebum production are all factors that can contribute to the appearance of enlarged pores. Additionally, age and sun damage can also cause the skin to lose its elasticity, leading to the enlargement of pores. While there are various treatment options available, proper skincare practices and lifestyle changes can also help minimise the appearance of enlarged pores,” she told indianexpress.com.

Any skin type, whether it’s oily, normal, or dry, can have large and open pores. These may give your skin a dull appearance, particularly if they’re clogged with dirt, bacteria, oil, or dead skin cells. “Naturally, we all get slightly growing pores as we get older. It is normal to have pores and there is nothing wrong with it. However, there are several causes of large-looking open pores,” Dr Sethi said in her Instagram video.

What causes pores, and it is only visible on oily skin?

Pores are tiny openings in the skin that allow hair follicles, sweat, and sebum (oil) to reach the skin’s surface. They are present in all types of skin, but they can be more visible on oily skin. This is because excess sebum can accumulate in the pores, making them appear enlarged. However, factors like genetics, age, and sun damage can also contribute to the visibility of pores. “Proper skincare, including regular exfoliation and using products specifically designed to minimize the appearance of pores, can help improve their appearance on all skin types,” Dr Chahar added.

Some reasons for enlarged pores include:

High levels of oil (sebum) production

If you feel your pores are larger than normal then it could be because you get too much acne or produce too much oil. “So, naturally your pores start to enlarge to encompass all that extra oil and obstruction,” she said.

Rosacea

It can also be due to rosacea (red coloured patches and visible blood vessels on the face). This is when your skin gets really sensitive; so naturally, the pores start to enlarge.

Ageing

Ageing will always cause your pores to enlarge. Excess sun exposure will worsen ageing, which will further pore enlargement.

Scars

Sometimes enlarged pores are actually scars. They look like pores but they are actually scars, so the treatment is different.

Other reasons may include reduced elasticity around pores caused by recurrent zits or blackheads/whiteheads, thick hair follicles, genetics or heredity, reduction of collagen production in the skin, caused by ageing and sun damage or overexposure to the sun.

How to treat enlarged pores?

Dr Chahar noted that wnlarged pores can be treated through a combination of proper skin care practices and professional treatments. Skincare practices like regular cleansing, exfoliation, and using products with salicylic acid or retinoids can help minimise their appearance. Professional treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser therapy can also help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. “Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can support skin health and reduce the appearance of pores. It is best to consult with a dermatologist to determine the best treatment plan for your specific skin concerns,” she concluded.
