Hair loss has become extremely common these days, and the reasons can be many. Anyone can lose hair on their head, but according to experts, it is more common in men. While in some cases, it could be due to an underlying health problem, but most commonly it is due to a poor hair care routine. Thus, it is extremely important to try to identify the cause of hair loss and treat the issue at the root.

Explaining the causes of hair fall, Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD-Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram, said, “It can happen because of different variables. The most widely recognised cause is a characteristic interaction called androgenetic alopecia, or male or female examples of hair loss, which is impacted by hereditary and hormonal elements. Certain ailments and medications like thyroid problems or alopecia errata, scalp contamination, inordinate styling or heat harm, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments can cause impermanent balding.”

Highlighting the same, Dr Manasi Shirolikar, Consultant Dermatologist wrote on Instagram, “We all tend to get a little bummed out after seeing excess hair fall. While this may happen due to a number of reasons like genetics, hormonal imbalance, thyroid, metabolism, and other health issues, there are many often-ignored everyday habits that may be the cause of hair fall too.”

Here’s what you need to stop doing, if you’d rather see more hair on your head than your hairbrush:

*Heat styling: Intense heat treatments without heat protection strips the hair of its outer cover by damaging the keratin, leading to water loss and easy breakage.

To counter the harms of heat styling, Dr Singh suggested reducing heat exposure, using heat protectant products, adjusting temperature settings, deep conditioning regularly, and trimming split ends.

*Eating gummies: Not many people know that most gummies contain gelatin and sugars which can lead to hair fall.

However, Dr Singh noted that while hair gummies may contain certain vitamins and minerals beneficial for hair health, it’s important to remember that overall nutritional balance is key. “A well-rounded diet that includes a variety of nutrients is usually more effective in supporting hair health than relying solely on supplements,” he added.

*Over-brushing: Excessive combing or brushing strains your scalp, which can cause breakage and hair loss.

Suggesting ways to protect the hair, Dr Singh said, “Firstly, choose a brush with soft bristles or wide-toothed combs that are gentle on your hair. Limit the frequency of brushing and focus on detangling your hair with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb when necessary. Protect your hair while sleeping by using a satin or silk pillowcase or wrapping your hair in a satin or silk scarf to reduce friction.”

*Tight ponytails: The constant pull and tension from tight hairstyles reduce the hairline, stressing and eventually damages hair follicles.

Adding to this, Dr Singh mentioned that to tie your hair without causing excessive hairfall, opt for loose or low ponytails. “Use soft hair ties or scrunchies instead of tight elastic bands. Additionally, vary your hairstyles and avoid wearing the same tight ponytail every day to reduce the risk of traction alopecia.”

*Rubbing with towel: Since wet hair is much more prone to falling out than dried hair, vigorously using a towel on it can lead to extreme breakage and hair loss.

“Gently blot your hair with a soft, microfibre towel or an old t-shirt to remove excess moisture,” he suggested.

Concluding, he said, “Addressing hairfall requires patience and a multifaceted approach tailored to your specific situation. Consistency in maintaining healthy habits and seeking professional guidance when needed will greatly help in tackling hairfall.”
