Good Friday 2025: Date, history, significance — all you need to know

Good Friday 2025 Date: Good Friday is one of the significant religious days in Christianity, which memorialises the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a day of mourning, observed in remembrance of his sacrifice and suffering on the cross.

While Good Friday is always observed on a Friday, its actual date changes each year depending on the Paschal full moon on or after the spring equinox, according to the Royal Museums Greenwich website.

Each year, Good Friday is commemorated on the Friday three days preceding Easter, and this year it will be observed on Friday, April 18, 2025 — marking the culmination of the Holy Week and beginning of the Easter weekend.

The story of Jesus Christ focuses on the ideals of sacrifice and forgiveness. According to the gospel,  Jesus was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death by crucifixion on this day in the AD 30s.

Many Christians believe Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice to make amends for the sins of humanity; thereby, it marks Jesus Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for humanity. The day is known as ‘Karfreitag’ or the Sorrowful Friday in German as a reflection of its gloomy nature.
