She is a successful doctor, entrepreneur, and mother, but for Dr Madhu Chopra — mother of actor Priyanka Chopra — being a grandmother to Maltie Marie Chopra Jonas is the most exciting role at the moment. Opening up about her daughter, the managing director of Studio Aesthetique, Mumbai said that Priyanka is a wonderful mother and that she hardly gave any parenting advice to her.

Talking more about her journey, Dr Chopra — MBBS, DORL, Cosmetologist — reveals the tips she gave her daughter to handle success in a positive way, navigate stressful situations, and also what mothers can do to help children pursue their dreams. Read the edited excerpts below:

You wear many hats — a mother, medical expert, entrepreneur, and grandmother. Which role do you enjoy the most and why?

All these roles are most enjoyable, but right now the novelty of being a grandmother is most exciting.

Talking about your newest role, how do you spend time with Malti Marie, and what parenting tips did you suggest to Priyanka (if any)?

Time spent with Malti Marie goes by in a flash. I hardly need to give any advice to Priyanka; she is a wonderful mother.

Your daughter launched her skin and hair care brand recently. Being a cosmetologist, did you help her with the formulations and ingredients for the products?

No, I did not. She had a great team of professionals who worked on the products.

In a similar vein, what should men and women keep in mind when it comes to taking care of their skin and hair during the monsoon season in India?

Keeping skin and hair dry and clean is the foundation of care during monsoon, especially if it gets wet in the rain.

You have raised a very successful daughter. What tips did you give Priyanka to help her handle all the success in a positive way? Also, what would you say to other women so they can help their daughters achieve their dreams?

My only suggestion would be to let them spread their wings to fly. Be the wind beneath their wings. Support their dreams. But before all that, have a full discussion where you can share your views amicably and also give them an opportunity to introspect and voice their opinion.

Women, owing to many reasons, often forget to take care of themselves. What are some of the most important things they should keep in mind for holistic well-being?

Women today are more aware of the importance of me time, grooming, and healthcare. My advice would be that a balance should be maintained and the day should be compartmentalised where there is space carved out for oneself, too.

Priyanka has often opened up about being a fan of DIY natural skincare remedies. Are there any family secrets that you would like to share with the readers?

As a working woman with little time for an elaborate routine, my best advice is to keep skin clean and moisturised. Sunscreen is essential. Also, ubtan is my favourite daily skincare routine.

Being a part of the glamour industry can take a toll on one’s mental health. Were there any expert tips you shared with Priyanka to help her navigate without any negative pressure?

My dictum has been ‘This too shall pass.’

Can you tell us about the amalgamation of science and holistic wellness and how it can help, something you discuss on your talk show?

Well, it’s a very broad topic. Svastha:  A Doctor’s Approach to Holistic Health is a talk show by me and my partner Dr Neetika Modi through which we aim to bridge the gap between science and Ayurveda. We, doctors, are beyond pills and needles. We believe in the age-old traditions of yoga, meditation and Ayurvedic lifestyle. The combination of ancient Indian wellness practices and modern medicines is the need of the hour.

On Instagram, you also shed light on the combo of Ayurveda and medical science. Do you see the two going hand in hand? If yes, in what ways?

As a doctor, I believe prevention is better than cure. The principles of Ayurveda help us prevent diseases and science cures it. From the spices in our food to DIY skincare remedies to daily practices like yoga and pranayama — we have it all. It’s now that the West follows it. Science and Ayurveda both together are a powerful combination to live a healthy, happy and long life.
