As much as your brain keeps telling you, colouring your hair, especially at home, might be the worst idea you’ve had, but if your heart wants what it wants, as Selena Gomez famously put, who are we to deny it?

What we can do is help you out a little so you come out the other side with your hair — and self-esteem — attached. There are some things you need to keep in mind when you’re colouring your hair at home. But before you even colour it, there’s a mental checklist of do’s and don’ts you must follow, as per Shilpa Haldar Joshi, Hair Colour and Care Development Manager South Asia, L’Oréal Paris.

Before you colour your hair, it is absolutely necessary to do a patch test. “What you need to do is, mix a small quantity of colour and developer, apply it on a small part of your skin behind your ears or on forearm, and wait for 24 hours to ensure there is no allergic reaction.”

Don’t throw out the box your hair colour came in. Instructions are important. Reading them will help you get the best possible results by preventing you from making any mistakes.

Joshi advises against applying the colour longer than the processing time mentioned on the box, as keeping the hair color on for a prolonged period can cause hair damage making it brittle and limp.

So how do you ensure you ace colouring your hair at home? Here are some ways Joshi recommends.

Go for non-ammonia hair colour

Joshi suggests opting for no-ammonia hair color to avoid the chemical smell, burning of eyes, and overall nice sensorial hair colouring experience.

Wait to colour if you got a hair treatment done recently

In case you’ve recently got a hair treatment done, it is ideal to wait for at least a week fortnight to colour your hair because colouring on sensitized hair doing so could lead to hair damage, Joshi recommends.

Don’t leave the colour on for longer than necessary

Keep in mind that chemically treated hair process colour more quickly, so you must not leave the colour on for long otherwise the final colour results will be affected. “Sticking to recommended pausing time is very crucial,” she says.

Avoid washing your hair a day or two prior

Another thing that not a lot of people know, and follow is that you should avoid washing your hair a day or two prior to colouring.

“When hair is not washed for 1-2 days, the natural oils and sebum create a protective barrier on the scalp so there’s less chance of any irritation and the colour pigment gets deposited better, resulting in a better colour outcome,” Joshi explains.

Stop using heat styling tools

It is no secret that you need to make sure that you’ve got the healthiest mane prior to hair colouration so that you get the best results post-colouration, but using heat styling tools acts as a hindrance since they strip the hair of its natural oils.

“Skip using such tools for at least a week before colouring your hair,” says Joshi.

Wash it off with normal water

To ensure your hair colour doesn’t fade and stays for longer, you must avoid washing your hair with hot water. “Use cool or normal-temperature or lukewarm water to wash the colour off your hair,” Joshi adds.
