Plastic-free July is here and what better than to make some essential tweaks in your day-to-day routine for your health as well as save the environment? For the unversed, plastic-free July encourages each one of us to be a part of the solution rather than the issue. “So we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of plastic-free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics?” the website plasticfreejuly.org mentions.
As such, actor and United Nations goodwill ambassador for sustainability and the environment, Dia Mirza spoke about the need to do away with single-use plastics which starts right from how you drink your coffee or tea.
Take a look.
Say Hi to #PlasticFreeJuly. “It takes 21 days to form a habit. Would you try carrying your own mug for 21 days? Imagine the number of single-use plastics cups/mugs you would stop from entering the natural world by doing this! I also read recently that the heat of the drink leeches microplastics into the drink. So each time we choose a disposable container even if it’s ‘paper’ (these are all lined with plastic) we are ingesting plastic,” said Mirza.
“Let’s come together and find more solutions for plastic pollution. Let’s change our behaviour. For our health and the health of our planet,” added Mirza.
In an earlier interaction with indianexpress.com, Mirza has spoken about how people need to be change drivers.
“People need to make better choices in their daily life in terms of the way we live. Manage waste better. Segregate dry and wet waste. That is the basic we can do. Reduce consumption so that we can produce less waste. Celebrate events, and birthday parties with zero waste or do sustainable celebrations so that we don’t consume wastefully,” she said.
According to plasticfreejuly.org, here are some simple measures that can help.
*Bringing or borrowing a reusable coffee cup or dine-in at your local café.
*Avoid using cleaning products packaged in single-use plastic.
*Find plastic-free alternatives when buying fruits and vegetables
*Bring your own reusable shopping bags and help reduce plastic waste.
*Refuse plastic straws when buying a drink & BYO reusable alternative!
*BYO reusable water bottles instead of buying plastic ones.
*Plan ahead and avoid pre-packed bread, rolls, and baked goods.
