Looking to tackle hair concerns without spending too much money? You’re at the right place. DIY hair masks have long been used to cure hair woes. Among them is a popular hair mask made with coffee, curd and olive oil, which is a popular home remedy that many people believe can improve the health and appearance of their hair. In fact, digital creator Ruchita Ghag shared a reel trying out the mask for “detoxifying” the scalp among other benefits.

For the hair mask, she mixed one bowl of curd (dahi) with 2-3 tablespoons of coffee powder, two tablespoons of olive oil and 1-2 tablespoons of honey.
How to apply?
She then applied it on the scalp and kept it for 30 minutes to an hour.
According to Ruchita, the mask helps stimulate the roots that help in hair growth, boosts blood circulation, adds vibrancy to natural hair colour, can be used as a natural dye for the hair, and detoxifies the scalp.
Does it work?
Dr Debeshi Bhattacharjee, clinical cosmetologist, medical head and founder, Lueur Aesthetics said that while it may work for some individuals, it’s important to understand the potential benefits and drawbacks of using this mixture.
“Coffee is often included in hair masks because it contains caffeine, which is believed to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. Additionally, coffee can help exfoliate the scalp, remove buildup, and enhance the shine of the hair,” said Dr Bhattacharjee.
Curd is a common ingredient in hair masks due to its nourishing properties. “It is rich in proteins and vitamins, which can help strengthen the hair strands, prevent breakage, and improve overall hair health. It also acts as a natural conditioner, leaving the hair soft and smooth. It can also help reduce frizz and add moisture to dry hair,” she said.
Olive oil is widely used in hair care due to its moisturising and nourishing qualities. “Additionally, it provides a natural shine and softness to the hair,” said Dr Bhattacharjee.
While this hair mask has several potential benefits, there are also a few drawbacks to consider. “Firstly, the smell of coffee may linger in the hair after rinsing, which can be unpleasant for some individuals. Additionally, coffee can potentially stain light-coloured or porous hair. It’s important to thoroughly rinse out the mask to minimise the risk of staining. Moreover, curd can sometimes cause an allergic reaction in individuals who are sensitive to dairy products. It’s advisable to perform a patch test before applying the mask all over the scalp and hair to check for any adverse reactions,” said the doctor.

The expert also added that as with any DIY treatment, results may vary, and it’s always recommended to consult a hair care professional for personalised advice and to ensure the ingredients are suitable for your hair type and condition.
Agreeing, Dr Nivedita Dadu, dermatologist, founder and chairman, Dadu Medical Centre said that there is limited scientific research specifically evaluating the benefits of this particular hair mask. “It’s important to be aware that individual results may vary. Before applying the mask, it is crucial to perform a patch test on a small area of your skin to check for any potential allergic reactions or sensitivity. This precaution is necessary as everyone’s skin and scalp react differently to various ingredients,” said Dr Dadu.
According to Dr Dadu, if one has any pre-existing scalp conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis or eczema, it’s advisable to consult with a dermatologist before using this hair mask. “Certain ingredients, including coffee and curd, may exacerbate these conditions in some individuals. Always opt for high-quality ingredients to minimise potential exposure to harmful chemicals, additives or contaminants. Fresh and organic ingredients are generally preferred. After applying the hair mask, make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly to remove any residue. Residual coffee grounds can be challenging to wash out, and failure to do so may lead to potential irritation or buildup on the scalp,” she added.

What else to consider?
Keep in mind that the effectiveness of the hair mask may vary based on your hair type, texture and overall hair health. Factors such as genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances and other external factors can significantly impact hair health and growth. “While a hair mask can provide temporary benefits, it is essential to maintain a holistic approach to hair care. This includes a well-balanced diet, proper hydration, regular washing and conditioning, and minimising exposure to heat styling tools and harsh chemicals,” Dr Dadu concluded.
