While the Children’s Day celebrations date back to 1956, the United Nations previously observed it as ‘Universal Children’s Day’ on November 20.
However, after Nehru died in 1964, the Government of India decided to mark the day to commemorate his birth anniversary.
Since then, November 14 has been celebrated as Children’s Day in India, while the UN General Assembly-led Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20.
Children’s Day promotes children’s rights and prioritises their needs and voices. It also increases awareness of the significance of children’s education in developing them to be better citizens of the country in the future.
