While the Internet is almost always ablaze with trends that could be the next quick fix, we talked to a certified dermatologist to unearth whether tretinoin can work as an aid to ease skin pigmentation.
How does tretinoin work?
Tretinoin contains vitamin A, an ingredient that is actively used in skincare regimes to treat acne and pigmentation problems. Tretinoin can be found in various skincare products like gels, creams, lotions, serums, and moisturizers. One can experience various drawbacks of tretinoin if not used correctly, said Dr Rinki Kapoor, consultant dermatologist and dermato-surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai.

Skin pigmentation is a common skin problem that if not treated properly or on time, can result in being worrisome. Tretinoin promotes “the production of skin cells by helping them shed the old ones resulting in a more even skin tone”, says Dr Kapoor. This skincare ingredient can be utilized to work effectively in resolving skin pigmentation on various parts of the body such as arms, neck, or even knee.
It is important to note that tretinoin may not be suitable for all skin types and may upsurge varying results in different skin types. People with sensitive skin should avoid using tretinoin products without consulting their dermatologist.
“It is ideally not recommended for people suffering from skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and rosacea. This can worsen their condition by aggravating the symptoms”, says Dr Kapoor. Symptoms include side-effects like “skin irritation, dryness, redness, increased sensitivity, worsening of the acne, and inflammation”. People are advised to always consult their dermatologist before starting with tretinoin. This can help them understand if their skin type and texture are suitable for using products that actively contain tretinoin. “Go slow by initially starting with skincare products that contain only 1 to 2% tretinoin to avoid allergic reactions”, Dr Kapoor advises.
