As Bruce Willis turned 68 on Sunday, his wife Emma Heming Willis marked the day by candidly opening up about the “grief and sadness” she feels over her husband’s dementia. “Today is one of those days of feeling the grief and sadness,” she captioned the post, adding that the “silver lining or the flip side” is that she’s lucky to feel the warmth and love directed toward Bruce and her family.
In a video posted alongside, Emma said that she has started the morning crying. “As you can see by my swollen eyes. It’s important that you see all sides of this.”

Continuing her efforts to raise awareness about the condition, she added, “I always get this message where people always tell me, ‘Oh you’re so strong. I don’t know how you do it.’ I’m not given a choice. I wish I was but I’m also raising two kids in this. Sometimes in our lives, we have to put our big girl panties on and get to it, and that’s what I’m doing. But I do have times of sadness every day, grief every day and I’m really feeling it today on his birthday.”
She concluded the video message by saying that “as much as I do it for myself, I do it for you because I know how much you love my husband”. In the caption, she thanked everyone for their messages and support. “I see your messages, your stories that you share, and all I can say is thank you. Your connection helps me and I hope it helps you in a small way to know that I see you and I deeply understand your journey as well.”
Last month, Bruce’s family announced the actor’s diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. “As a family, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for the outpouring of love and compassion for Bruce over the past ten months. Your generosity of spirit has been overwhelming, and we are tremendously grateful for it. For your kindness, and because we know you love Bruce as much as we do, we wanted to give you an update,” his family said in a statement.
A couple of weeks back, Emma had taken to social media to ask photographers and videographers to keep their distance from Bruce as he stepped out following his dementia diagnosis. “I know this is your job, but maybe, just keep your space. Allow space. Allow whoever is with him to get him from Point A to Point B safely,” added Emma, further stating that she wants her husband to “participate in his life fully”.
