Gone are the days when one would wait for a diagnosis before starting to work on improving one’s health. Experts urge that preventive steps can help one’s health issues to be nipped in the bud. This brings us to Ayurvedic treatments which experts suggest can help alongside allopathic treatments as long as done under guidance.

Dr Puneet, founder and director, Karma Ayurveda said certain herbs can help cleanse the kidneys to help keep chronic issues at bay, provided it is balanced with other lifestyle changes.

“Ayurveda offers an all-natural way to keep the kidneys in good shape. It must be noted, however, that any Ayurvedic treatments should go hand in hand with allopathic treatments and all practitioners involved must discuss things with each other. This is particularly important for people with existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension as these two increase one’s risk of a kidney disorder,” said Dr Puneet.

According to Dr Hansaji Yogendra, director, The Yoga Institute, there are also some effective Ayurvedic herbal remedies to detoxify and improve kidney function. “Then there is Panchakarma – a detoxification and revitalization therapy for better kidney health.”

Coriander

Both the seeds and leaves of coriander can be used as a kidney-friendly herb. Being a diuretic, coriander aids the body in flushing excess sodium and water. It is also found to help alleviate symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI), which if left untreated can cause kidney infection.

Basil

Also known as Tulsi, basil has antioxidant properties. It assists in releasing toxins from the body by increasing the metabolism. An easy way to incorporate tulsi into your routine is by using a couple of leaves in your regular tea or boiling it in your water and drinking it throughout the day.

Ginger

Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. In Ayurveda, inflammation is considered a contributing factor to kidney problems. By reducing inflammation, ginger may help protect the kidneys from damage. It can also be easily grated and consumed in everyday tea, especially during the winter months, said Dr Puneet.

Garlic

High blood pressure is a risk factor for kidney disease. Garlic has been suggested to help regulate blood pressure, thus being a kidney-friendly herb.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. According to Ayurveda, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress supports kidney health and revives kidney function.
