Tiger Shroff may not be scared to try stunts, but the actor does fear flying. Despite being in a profession that requires him to travel often, Shroff recently opened up about this particular fear — called aerophobia.

“I used to like travelling. Then I suddenly developed a phobia of flying,” Shroff told Curly Tales, adding, “I was once on a turbulent flight. Ever since then, it has been playing on my mind.”

So when his Bade Miyan Chote Miyan co-actor Akshay Kumar found out about the same, he tried to help Tiger Shroff overcome this fear. But how? “He is the only actor who travels khade hokar (standing). Once the flight takes off, he stands. And he sits only during takeoff and landing. I tried to dissuade him. I tried to distract him with a game of ludo. But all in vain,” Kumar revealed in the same episode.

What is aerophobia, and what causes it?

Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai explained that just like aquaphobia (fear of water) or acrophobia (fear of heights), some people develop aerophobia or a fear of flying. “A large number of people struggle with the fear of flying. Some of these people avoid flying and will get uncomfortable on flights. They may suffer from panic attacks, and become anxious or stressed. The cause behind this phobia could be turbulence, fear during landing and take-off, hearing stories about plane crashes, violence, hijacking, and terrorism,” said Dr Agarwal.

Some people with aerophobia tend to feel triggered by the small space in aircraft and feel trapped as they usually also have claustrophobia. “People who already have a fear of heights or acrophobia can also suffer from aerophobia,” Dr Agarwal told indianexpress.com.

Symptoms

One may showcase symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, abdominal distress, shortness of breath, irritability, frustration, confusion, disorientation, nervous breakdown, and heart palpitations, Dr Agarwal said.

What can help?

According to Dr Agarwal, one can take cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and counselling, note down the triggers and manage them, and get some understanding regarding flying.
