While every relationship and marriage is different, everyone agrees that it is a continuous work in progress. This means you need to take out time for your partner regularly. This not only enhances quality time but also enriches your relationship. If content creator Amy Earle is to go by, partners should follow the ‘1-1-1-1 marriage rule’.

“We’ve been married 29 years and I think this is brilliant for any couple who is looking for a framework. There are exceptions to rules, but this pattern would be great to follow to keep the connection alive. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last 29 years, it’s to prioritise our relationship above everything else, including the kids. We’re at the place now as our kids have grown that I don’t regret a single time we prioritised our marriage and relationship,” said Earle in a post on Instagram.

Why is it needed?

In today’s fast-paced work environments, it can be challenging to prioritise and nurture our relationships. By focusing on small gestures, we can address underlying issues and build a strong emotional foundation. “This foundation of love, support, and romance can help us navigate tough times together, providing comfort and strength when faced with difficulties,” said Arouba Kabir, emotional and mental health professional, and founder, Enso Wellness.

The rule comprises

1-week vacation alone each year, no kids.
1 date night a week with no distractions
1 each spouse initiates sexual intimacy one time every week
1 30-minute block of no screen time to connect every single night

Dr Sonal Anand, psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road shared that the 1-1-1-1 marriage rule can be taken as a guideline for a healthy and happy marriage. “The idea behind this rule is that by each having their interests, couples can maintain their sense of identity and prevent feelings of being suffocated or smothered in the relationship,” said Dr Sonal.

This aspect of the rule suggests that both partners should prioritise taking a week-long vacation alone each year, without the presence of children. “This dedicated time allows individuals to recharge, relax, and focus on themselves. It provides an opportunity for self-care, personal reflection, and a break from the routine of daily life. This time apart can ultimately bring a sense of rejuvenation and help strengthen the bond between partners,” said Dr Sonal.

This could be a beach vacation, a cultural tour, or any other trip that allows you to unwind and enjoy each other’s company, shared Arouba.

1=Date night once a week with no distractions

The second component of the rule emphasises the importance of regular date nights for couples. It suggests setting aside one evening each week to spend quality time together without any distractions. “This could involve going out for a romantic dinner, watching a movie, engaging in a shared hobby, or simply having meaningful conversations. Having dedicated date nights helps keep the spark alive, strengthens emotional connection, and allows partners to continuously nurture their relationship,” expressed Dr Sonal.

This aspect highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy and fulfilling physical bond within the relationship. Dr Sonal suggests that partners take turns initiating intimate moments, which can create anticipation, increase desire, and provide opportunities for emotional and physical connection. “By prioritising each other’s needs, couples can actively nurture their bond and deepen their emotional and physical intimacy,” said Dr Sonal.

1= 30-minute block of no screen time to connect every single night

The final element of the rule emphasises the importance of daily quality time and communication. It suggests setting aside a dedicated 30-minute block of time each night with no screen distractions. According to Dr Sonal, during this time, couples can focus on each other, engage in meaningful conversations, share experiences, and connect on a deeper level. “This intentional daily connection strengthens emotional intimacy, promotes understanding, and allows partners to support each other,” said Dr Sonal.
