Lady Gaga has always walked her own path, and in the process carved an alternative path as well. An inspiration to many, the singer and actor gave a rousing speech when she was honoured at ELLE’s Women in Hollywood. She had stepped out wearing an oversized male blazer and in the course of her speech, explained her choice.
She recollected that as she started getting ready that night, she rejected every dress, every gown one after the other. “To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach and I asked myself: What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood?” She then went on to explain how women are perceived. “We do not just object to entertain the world. We are not simply images to bring smile or grimaces to people’s faces. We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pitted against one another for the pleasures of the public.”
She reveals the way she sees women — as voices. “We have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced.” Speaking on the outfit she wore, she said, “In this suit, I felt like me today. I felt the truth of who I am…and then wondering what I wanted to say tonight became very clear to me…Today I wanted to take the power back. Today I wear the pants.”
She also spoke passionately about being a survivor of sexual assaults, the scars that she has been left with and how it is imperative to speak about it.
