There are few success stories as riveting as the one written and lived by Shah Rukh Khan. The actor has had a phenomenal journey and his rise from nowhere to dizzying success has encouraged and influenced people over the years. And it is not his strive to succeed that made him who he is but his crippling fear of failure.
In this video, he talks extensively on both. “Success is a wonderful thing…but we do not acquire anything from it. Maybe that is why it cannot be passed on either. Me being successful does not mean my kids are going to be successful even if I teach them everything I know and how to do it.” He goes on to say that talking about success is a complete waste of time. “Whatever happened to me, happened because I have always been terrified of failure. I do not want as much to succeed as much as I do not want to fail.” Coming from a lower, middle-class family, he saw a lot of failure. Speaking about his father, he says, “My father was not the most beautiful man and the most successful failure in the world. My mother also failed to stay long enough with me.”
Growing amidst abject poverty, he says it is not an ennobling experience at all. “Poverty entails fear and stress and sometimes depression. I watched my parents go through this several times.” And thus, poverty for him became synonymous with being a failure. “I just did not want to be poor.” And it was this fear that triggered him to act in films, the fear to not fail or be poor again. Failure makes you humble, he says.
