People often highlight the virtues of kindness and forgiveness towards others, emphasising their significance in fostering positive relationships and harmony. While this sentiment holds true, it’s equally important to extend the same compassion to ourselves. Amidst advocating for empathy towards others, we sometimes overlook the need to treat ourselves with the same understanding and care. Just as we value being forgiving to others; it is crucial to forgive ourselves too.
Believing in the same is Chef Maria Goretti, who recently opened up about the need to forgive ourselves on the podcast, Impact Stories by Ankit Chauhan. “There is this Hawaiian prayer, which is called the Ho’oponopono prayer. It says, ‘I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.'”
Calling it “a beautiful prayer”, she added, “It’s basically thanking the universe, saying sorry to the universe, asking the universe’s forgiveness, and expressing gratitude to the universe.”
She shared that one very important thing that all of us forget is to forgive ourselves. “We hold ourselves responsible for so many things. Maybe because I did this, this happened. Because sometimes we need to say, ‘Okay, I forgive me.’ You need to just do that,” she said.
Concluding, Maria said that it’s an everyday thing and nothing changes in one day. “But I think every day a little bit makes a big difference,” she added.
Several people resonated with her thoughts and took to the comment section to express their views. While one user wrote, “Yup, learn to love yourself too,” another user commented: “Every word she is beautiful and absolutely true.”
“True and beautiful, one should be thankful and forgiving,” a user wrote.
Earlier, Kriti Sanon too had opened up about the need to be kind to ourselves. “You know what, the truth is that the one person you talk to the most, you listen to the most, and the one whose words affect you the most is you!” “So be kind, be gentle to yourself, in your head,” she said.
The actor added, “When we talk to a friend or even a stranger, we make sure we don’t say something rude, mean, demotivating. But we never think that way when we talk to ourselves. We are constantly taking our faults, constantly saying something negative. ‘Oh, I got a pimple today’, ‘Are my arms looking fat?’, ‘I don’t think I can do this’, ‘Oh, I could have done this better’, and so on.”
She concluded by asking everyone to be “nicer to yourself than you are to others”.
