The benefits of Yoga could be listed as many, be it boosting endurance and stamina, massaging internal organs or getting relief from chronic pain. But for Las Vegas-based Heidi Williams, yoga helped her to get back her mental peace.
As a survivour of rape, and having suffered great levels of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), she turned to Yoga to revive her mind, body and spirit. “Yoga brought me to a safe place again,” she told Mantra Yoga + Health. “A place of peace and self-acceptance,” William adds.
William has shared her experience to give hope to others who have gone similar trauma. She also manages a Facebook page known as Heidi Williams support group, which she describes as “a safe zone”. Through her blog and support group she tries to build an environment for surviours and those who fight for mental health. She says her group is the “place to begin healing. A place of understanding, compassion, inspiration and love.”
According to a report by Borepanda, Williams almost lost her 6-month-old son; she had even attempted to commit suicide. It was yoga practice that brought back the zeal in her life and now she has dedicated her life to inspire and help others.
“I was able to heal from my mental illnesses and have now dedicated my life and career to helping others through the self-healing process,” she explains in a report by the My Modern Met. Williams’ yoga regime focuses on therapeutic classes and retreats planned for those who are suffering from the same experiences that once troubled her. Her Instagram account is a repository of inspiration. Her account features stunning photographs in unbelievable poses – flaunting her strength, flexibility and grace.
When people talk about yoga benefits, they mostly refer to its physiological side and not much is mentioned about its psychological side. Yoga not only improves mental well-being but also helps in fighting anxiety and depression. According to the British Psychological Society, Yoga involves concentration on the breath and body, which in return makes it a excellent way to soothe a person’s mind.
