Many of us have the nagging habit of frequently rubbing our eyes. While it may seem harmless, experts like physical therapist Dr Aqib Jamal do not recommend it. According to him, it is better to lightly rub around the eyes—under or on the sides and under the eyebrows. But why?
Dr Maneendra, consultant and HOD critical care department, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, said that while rubbing your eyes may seem harmless, it can lead to several problems. “Rubbing too hard can damage the delicate tissues, leading to corneal abrasions or worsening conditions like keratoconus, a disease where the cornea becomes thin and misshapen. This habit can also break tiny blood vessels, causing redness or irritation,” said Dr Maneendra.

The expert added that when we rub our eyes, especially with unclean hands, we risk introducing bacteria and dirt, which can cause infections like conjunctivitis. “The correct way to touch your eyes is to ensure your hands are clean. Avoid rubbing them directly. If they feel itchy or irritated, use a clean, cold compress to soothe them,” shared Dr Maneendra.

For dryness or discomfort, lubricating eye drops are safer than rubbing, noted Dr Maneendra.
“Massaging the eyes from the sides is generally not recommended, as excessive pressure can damage the eye’s structure. Always be gentle with the eye area, and consult an eye specialist if irritation persists,” said Dr Maneendra.
