Television actor Mahhi Vij has reportedly been diagnosed with chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease. Her husband, Jay Bhanushali, confirmed the news in an interview with Hindustan Times, revealing that Mahhi and their family nanny both contracted the disease.

Jay explained, “Mahhi is in the hospital. Even our nanny got the same disease. So, for the last two-three days, I have been taking care of Tara (their daughter) and everything at home on my own. It’s a bit different for her too as she is so used to Mahhi and her nanny being close to her, so it’s like a cultural shock for her that papa is getting her ready every morning now,” he said, adding that his wife should be fine and get discharged soon.

Understanding chikungunya

Dr Narendra Singhla, lead consultant, internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, shares that chikungunya remains a significant public health concern. The viral disease, spread primarily by mosquitoes, is marked by severe joint pain, fever, and swelling, often leaving patients debilitated for weeks. “However, it is not a communicable disease, so possibly two members of a household contracting the disease could point to hygiene issues,” he said.

How chikungunya spreads

Chikungunya is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, specifically from the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species. Other less common forms of transmission, Dr Singhla said, include:

  1. Mother-to-child transmission: This can occur during pregnancy or childbirth.
  2. Blood transfusion: Rare cases of transmission through infected blood.
  3. Laboratory handling: Exposure to contaminated samples can pose a risk for healthcare workers.

How to control the spread of chikungunya

Dr Singhla explained the measures one can take to control the disease:

  • Wear protective clothing and apply insect repellents.
  • Eliminate standing water in and around homes to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
  • Use mosquito nets and screens to keep mosquitoes out of living spaces.
  • Avoid being outside during peak mosquito hours, usually around dawn and dusk.
  • Maintain good hygiene and take steps to prevent mosquito bites.

Chikungunya is diagnosed through laboratory tests, such as serology or PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), which confirm the presence of the virus. Since there is no specific antiviral treatment, management focuses on relieving symptoms, particularly joint pain, fever, and dehydration. Dr Singhla said that patients are often advised to rest, stay hydrated, and take pain-relief medications.

Prevention strategies to reduce risk

To prevent chikungunya, Dr Singhla said it is crucial to minimise exposure to mosquitoes and reduce mosquito breeding opportunities:
