one should make sure they are eating organic mangoes that are naturally ripened, without any artificial carbides, thereby reducing the risk of triggering acne. (Source: Freepik)Summer is here, and with it comes the season of the king of fruits — mangoes. This juicy fruit is high in vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and fibre. While mango is deemed one of the healthiest fruits, there is a popular belief that it might cause breakouts. But is there any truth to this assumption? Let’s find out.
Dr Kiran Sethi, a dermatologist, wrote on Instagram, “If you’re like me and can’t resist the sweet taste of this delicious fruit, but hate the zits that come along with it, I’ve got some tips for you!” adding that one should ensure they are eating organic mangoes that are naturally ripened, without any artificial carbides, thereby reducing the risk of triggering acne.
“Secondly, while we all love the high sugar content in mangoes, it’s important to remember that too much sugar can also lead to more acne. So, enjoy your mangoes in moderation,” she continued.

However, Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD-Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram has an opposing opinion. “Mangoes do not cause acne, but sometimes the allergy-causing substances are found in the peel. Additionally, the fortified juices have high glycemic index which can cause eruptions in the acne-prone skin,” he told indianexpress.com.
Adding to this, he said that if you have doubts whether your acne is due to mangoes, you need to try a few things before blaming the fruit, such as:
*Eat fresh mango fruit and not it’s juice
*Avoid touching the mango peel to your skin
*Don’t bite directly into the mango, instead eat the cut fruit with forks or spoons
*Try to eat cooked mango dishes instead of raw ones
On similar lines, Dr Sethi shared a tip to reduce risk of breakouts after eating mangoes. “While there’s no clinical evidence to support Ayurvedic beliefs that heated fruit can cause acne, if you do notice more breakouts after eating hot or warm mangoes, try cooling them down before eating,” she said.
Concurring, Dr Mandeep said that soaking mangoes in water before consuming has many advantages. “It helps identify artificially ripened mangoes (if they float in water), removes excess phytic acid and mango sap oils which can trigger allergic reactions and promotes rehydration of dried fruits.”
