Doctors at Meenaskhi Mission Hospital and Research Centre said they have performed an innovative single incision laparoscopic surgery, the first such in south Tamil Nadu, that results in fewer scars and less pain than the conventional procedure.
The surgery is performed to remove gall bladders and appendicitis surgery.
A hospital press release, quoting Dr.Ramesh Ardhanari head of the astroenterology Department, said conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy is performed with three to four incisions through which the ports (instruments) are passed. This results in about three scars on the abdomen.
He said many patients, especially young women, many of whom go in for modelling, demanded a procedure with minimum or no scars and that was why the hospital brought in this procedure
The hospital has performed the surgery on four patients, all of whom have recovered well,he claimed.
