Actor and model Sherlyn Chopra recently apprised her fans and followers that she decided to get her breast implants removed owing to chronic pain – especially in her back, neck, chest, and shoulders. “Since the last couple of months, I have been enduring chronic back, chest, neck and shoulder pain and chronic pressure in my chest area. After a series of medical investigations and back and forth consultations, I have realised that the cause of my chronic pain has been my heavy breast implants, and so in my best interests, and to bring back agility, vitality and stamina into my life, I have decided to have my breast implants removed once and for all,” expressed Chopra, 38.

Documenting how she is feeling in a video on Instagram, the Wajah Tum Ho actor shared, “Am I nervous? A little….excited? Immensely. I cannot wait to start a brand new life with no excess baggage. I pray that the almighty bless me and the hands of the surgeons who are going to be performing my breast implant removal surgery today.”

Reflecting on her decision, she wrote in the caption to the post, “In Aug 2023, I had gotten all the fillers, removed from my face so as to look like my authentic self. And today, I’m undergoing a breast implant removal surgery so as to live life with no excess baggage. Please understand that this post is not about criticising fillers and/or silicon implants and/or the lovers of the same. Taking a cue from her admission, let’s understand how breast implants affect the body.

Dr Shraddha Deshpande, consultant plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central said while many people choose breast implants to improve their appearance or confidence, these can sometimes lead to long-term issues. “Back, neck, and chest pain are common, especially with larger implants that add extra weight on the body’s natural structure. Over time, this added weight can strain the shoulders, cause posture problems, and lead to ongoing discomfort. In some cases, chest pain can result from nerve irritation, tissue inflammation, or the tightening of scar tissue around the implant, a condition known as capsular contracture,” said Dr Deshpande.

Chopra’s symptoms seem to match what many individuals with oversized implants experience, said Dr Deshpande. “When implants are too large for someone’s body size, the spine and shoulder muscles must work harder to support the extra weight. This can lead to ongoing aches, stiffness, or even nerve pain. Sometimes, the pain can also result from the implants shifting or internal scar tissue forming, which puts pressure on nearby nerves and tissues,” said Dr Deshpande.

Can surgery correct such implant-related issues?

Yes, affirmed Dr Deshpande, adding that many people find relief through corrective surgery, including implant removal, reduction, or replacement. “These procedures can help restore natural posture, lessen pressure on the chest and back, and reduce chronic pain. Once the implants are removed or resized, the body often starts to realign, and symptoms usually improve with proper rest and rehabilitation,” said Dr Deshpande.

What should people consider before opting for implants?

The most important factor is understanding your own body and choosing sizes that feel natural. “Decisions about implant size, material, and placement should be made carefully, focusing on comfort and long-term health instead of trends. Regular monitoring through scans and being aware of any unusual pain, tightness, or changes in shape are essential for catching complications early,” said Dr Deshpande.

Post-surgery care

Good posture, regular stretching, and strength exercises for the back and shoulders can help reduce strain, recommended Dr Deshpande. “Supportive undergarments and mindful body movements are also important. Ultimately, the goal of any body enhancement should be to boost confidence without compromising health, where beauty and well-being go hand in hand.”
