Mental health is an important aspect of overall well-being. However, these days more and more people are becoming prone to mental health issues due to stress, isolation and other factors. While medication and therapy can help manage the symptoms of various mental health disorders, there are a number of habits and lifestyle modifications one can inculcate to improve their quality of life.

Enter positive affirmations–a self-help strategy used to promote self-confidence and belief in your own abilities. They might be a useful tool to instill positive thinking.

Rohini Kesavan Rajeev, Senior Psychotherapist and Founder, The Able Mind said, “Affirmations are positive statements or phrases about oneself that when deliberately and intentionally repeated help change the detrimental effects of negative self-talk and challenges self-defeating beliefs. Positive self-affirmations empower, motivate and increase one’s self-esteem.”

Adding, Vishnu Priya Bhagirath, a counselling psychologist said, “Affirmations are positive statements that can help us to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. They have been used to successfully treat people with low self-esteem, depression, and other mental health conditions.”

How do affirmations work?

According to Rajeev, based on the self-affirmation theory, affirmations work on the premise that by deliberate repetition of positive thoughts, we can reprogram our subconscious mind and overcome negative or restricting thoughts.

“It is easy to understand and practice–all we need to do is to pick a positive statement that we resonate with and repeat it to ourselves daily. They are usually written in the present tense and focus on the intended result or state of being,” she said.

The expert stresses that affirmations are said to be most effective when written down (in a journal) and then read or practiced loudly in front of a mirror. “Even if you are a sceptic, it won’t hurt to try out a research-backed, happiness and hope-inducing statement about yourself, and repeating it in private as a harmless way to induce optimism!” she added.

Are they effective?

The psychotherapist highlights that there is enough empirical evidence to support that positive self-affirmation practices are beneficial and bring hope to people.

However, she said that they are not a miracle panacea. “Affirmations should also be consistent with an individual’s values, practices and founded on self-compassion and self-acceptance.”

“While repeating an affirmation can help boost your motivation and confidence, you still have to take some action yourself. They can be a step towards change, not the change itself. Moreover, they may be more effective when we pair them with other positive thinking and goal setting,” said Bhagirath.

So, when was the last time you told yourself that you are awesome, you’ve got this and meant it?
