There are so many herbal hacks suggested for a good night’s sleep to ensure you wake up fresh. While some work, others fail to help you get a restful slumber. As such, when we came across the herbal remedy comprising a tea prepared with a dash of nutmeg, a few soaked raisins, and saffron strands for a good night’s sleep, we immediately paused to take a closer look.
According to nutritionist Leema Mahajan, the sleep-inducing tea is worth a try.
Here’s the recipe from Mahajan as part of which she also listed down the benefits.
*Boil 1 glass of water
*Add a pinch of nutmeg – It contains a compound trimyristin which induces sleep and helps in calming muscles.
*8-10 black raisins, soaked – Raisins have melatonin which is the hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle
*Let this mixture boil and then add 2 strands of kesar or saffron 2 strands – Kesar has crocetin which helps to improve the quality of sleep.
When to have the tea?
“Drink this tea an hour before bed to induce sleep and improve the quality of sleep,” said Mahajan.
Does the herbal tea work?
Dr Ushakiran Sisodia, registered dietician and clinical nutritionist, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai affirmed that utilising herbal ingredients in tea can be beneficial for those looking to improve their sleep quality. “Many individuals are turning towards natural remedies to alleviate sleeplessness caused by work pressures and other stressors,” said Dr Sisodia.
Nutmeg, which is known for its nutty and slightly sweet taste, is known to aid in relieving anxiety-related sleeplessness, mentioned Dr Sisodia. “It should be used in moderation as it can be somewhat intense and may not suit individuals who are sensitive to spicy flavours,” said Dr Sisodia.
According to Dr Sisodia, saffron, a powerful antioxidant, has various health benefits, including potentially improving mood, reducing PMS symptoms, and even having cancer-fighting properties. “However, it is essential to be aware of the appropriate dosage and potential precautions when adding it to your tea,” said Dr Sisodia.
Raisins are also a good addition to the tea as they provide fibre and have a cooling effect on the body, which can be beneficial in promoting relaxation and improving sleep quality, she added.

Dr Sisodia also suggested a tweak to the tea. “To prepare this tea, combine nutmeg powder, saffron, and a hint of khus khus powder with pre-soaked black raisins in hot water. You can either boil this mixture or let it steep as an infusion,” said Dr Sisodia.
However, if you have been suffering from poor sleep for a long time or have insomnia, it is advisable to see your doctor now, Mahajan added.
