Kesha opens up about her health struggles (Source: Kesha/Instagram) Kesha, who has always been candid about her personal and professional ordeals, recently opened up about health struggles she faced following her egg-freezing procedure. In an interview with Self, the American singer-songwriter said that she nearly died in January after freezing her eggs.
“I almost died in January,” she said, adding that she froze her eggs last year. On New Year’s Eve a few weeks later, Kesha performed in the Bahamas, and after the show, she found herself too weak to walk. When the 36-year-old went to the hospital, the doctors discovered that she had developed “an uncommon yet serious complication” from the fertility procedure, partly due to her weakened immune system.
“I finally feel recovered, but it took a couple of months. It was horrifying,” the singer, who spent nine days in a Miami hospital, said.

For the unversed, egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, means a procedure wherein the woman’s eggs (oocytes) are taken out, frozen, and stored for preservation to get pregnant at a later stage. “Currently, there is an increasing demand for this procedure. Those women undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, having surgery, suffering from premature ovarian failure, ovarian disease, having BRCA mutation, or who are career ambitious are opting for this procedure to increase the chances of future pregnancy,” Dr Nisha Pansare, Fertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune, said.
She explained that it is imperative for the couple to speak to a fertility consultant and get all the misconceptions cleared regarding egg freezing. “It is one of the best options to help women fulfil their dream of motherhood. The women will surely be able to start a family in the future,” Dr Pansare said.
But, are there risks involved in this procedure? According to the expert, this procedure is generally safe and promises 100 per cent results. “However, some of the risks related to this procedure are ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (enlargement of the ovaries and fluid accumulation in the pelvis and abdomen), infection, and bleeding linked to the egg retrieval procedure,” she said, adding that these side effects are rarely seen.
As such, Dr Pansare advised against fretting and believing such rumours. “It is a good idea to consult an expert who will guide you regarding this procedure,” she said.
As for the precautions, she suggested avoiding heavy exercises that can cause stress on the body. “One should avoid alcohol, smoking, caffeine, and taking medications and many herbal supplements without the knowledge of a fertility consultant. It is better to stay stress-free during this procedure,” she said.
