This year, as we celebrate the International Year of Millets, it would be a good idea to apprise ourselves of the many varieties of millets that are grown and how they can best be incorporated into our diets for optimum benefits. So, let’s begin with the type that is often spoken about — ragi or finger millet. Even the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently tweeted about the nutritional benefits of ragi on its official page.
Take a look. “Finger millet (ragi/mandua) is highly nutritious and offers various health benefits, including reducing blood glucose levels, promoting bone health, and possessing antimicrobial properties,” it shared.

Why should you have ragi this summer?
According to Khushboo Jain Tibrewala, founder, The Health Pantry, nutritionist and diabetes educator, ragi is one of the best cereal options for Indians. “It is more alkaline than other cereals, which is why it is considered cooling and ideal for summers,” Tibrewala told indianexpress.com.
As it is a rich source of calcium, Tibrewala claimed that two ragi rotis contain the same amount of calcium as a glass of milk. “Ragi is a powerful anti-inflammatory food. It also has antioxidant compounds that can improve glycemic control in diabetics and improve overall health,” Tibrewala mentioned.
The expert further shared that in states like Tamil Nadu, one can easily find a street side beverage called “ragi koozh” in the summer months that is made using fermented ragi. “It cools down the gut and gives you instant energy. You will see similar preparations in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra,” Tibrewala added.
