There are so many dos and don’ts when it comes to weight loss which affects metabolic processes in the body such as the thyroid which is a gland that is responsible for hormonal balance. As such, when we came across a post suggesting that lobia or black-eyed beans can help with weight loss and even aid thyroid management, we were intrigued. Before experts share their opinion, here’s what the post read.
“Lobia aids weight loss. Lobia is a low-calorie food that provides numerous nutrients like folate, protein, and iron. Moreover, according to lobia nutrition facts, 100 grams has around 44 per cent fibre that aids in weight loss. This fibre helps in the removal of toxins, accumulated fat, and cellulite from the body,” the post by nutritionist Simran Vohra said.
“Lobia is loaded with fibre, and the kind it has is known as soluble fibre, which binds to cholesterol and helps throw it out of the body, besides keeping constipation away,” said Vohra suggesting that it can help boost satiety.
The reel also mentioned that the “lobia helps to control thyroid levels”. Is it true?
Dr Santosh Pandey, naturopath and acupuncturist, Rejua Energy Centre, Mumbai said that black-eyed beans also named as “super beans” are high in nutrition with protein, antioxidants, complex carbohydrates, and loads of vitamins and minerals. “Thyroid hormones help control a number of bodily functions so when there is imbalance people experience symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, mood changes, and constipation. The first line of treatment is a healthy diet and lifestyle which can help improve thyroid function and symptoms. Constant inclusion of such beans in the diet along with other measures can aid in the thyroid as zinc in such beans helps with hormone balance,” said Dr Pandey.
While legumes like lobia are a good source of plant-based protein, fibre, and various vitamins and minerals, which contribute to a healthy diet, Dr Shuchin Bajaj, founder-director, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals said that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that lobia (black-eyed beans) can directly control thyroid function. “The thyroid gland is primarily regulated by hormones and nutrients in the body, such as iodine, selenium, and zinc. While a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is important for overall thyroid health, specific foods like lobia alone cannot control or cure thyroid disorders,” said Dr Bajaj.
Dr Bajaj urged that consuming a well-rounded diet with a variety of nutrient-rich foods, including legumes, can support overall health, including thyroid health. “If you have concerns about your thyroid function, it is advisable to consult with a medical professional who can provide appropriate guidance and treatment,” said Dr Bajaj.
