Curry leaves, commonly referred to as kadi patta in India, not only immensely enhance the flavour of dishes they are added to, but also come loaded with serious health benefits. From promoting weight loss and heart health to helping you fight morning sickness and bacteria infection – the list of its benefits is long!
Highlighting these, and the numerous other health benefits of curry leaves, dietician Mac Singh took to Instagram and shared a comprehensive list. “Curry leaves or kadhi patta is the natural flavour enhancers used in any Indian food,” he wrote in the caption.
Check out the health benefits of curry leaves, as shared by Singh:
1. Cuts belly fats: There is whole research done on the effectiveness of curry leaves. The research “Antiobesity and Lipid lowering effects of murraya koenigii” shows that the compound – Carbazole Alkaloids (that are present in curry leaves) — help reduce obesity, and also the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol, which promote obesity.
2. Helps treat morning sickness: Curry leaves have a carminative property, which means they treat gas, bloating and flatulence, thus aiding digestion. Indigestion is the major cause of morning sickness and nausea. Pregnant ladies, take note.
3. Heals skin wounds: Since curry leaves have antiseptic properties, their paste can be applied to burns, bruises and skin eruptions to treat them. Kadhi patte ka lep (Curry leaves paste) is helpful even in case of bee stings and bites of poisonous reptiles. Apart from this, it also helps treat mouth ulcers.
4. Lowers cholesterol: As proven in the same research, the Carbazole Alkaloids present in curry leaves prevent the oxidation of cholesterol, which in turn gives rise to bad cholesterol i.e., LDL Cholesterol. This prevents the risk of heart-related disorders.
5. Fights bacterial infection: Another research has shown that curry leaves have powerful action against infection caused due to bacterial strains like E. coli and Staphylococcus Aureus. Both carbazole alkaloids and another compound — linalool — are known to destroy free radicals and harmful bacteria.
6. Protects the liver: Compounds termed carbazole alkaloids and tannins offer hepatoprotective effects to the liver. They are helpful in the traditional treatment of liver cirrhosis, too.
7. Treats diabetes: Curry leaves, taken on an empty stomach, lower sugar levels in the blood. It is considered a boon for diabetes patients.
8.Treats calcium deficiency: Curry leaves have a high amount of calcium(830 mg/100 g).
Speaking with indianexpress.com, Pratiksha Kadam, Consultant, Dietician & Nutritionist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai said, “Curry leaves are low in calories and are a good source of fiber, which can help you feel full and satisfied, potentially leading to a reduction in overall calorie intake. Additionally, some research suggests that curry leaves may help to regulate blood sugar levels, which could also have a positive impact on weight management”.
However, she added that it’s important to note that simply adding curry leaves to your diet is unlikely to result in significant weight loss on its own. “To achieve weight loss, it’s important to focus on a healthy and balanced diet, regular physical activity, and other lifestyle factors such as stress management and adequate sleep”.
Explaining how curry leaves can aid weight loss, Sameena Ansari – Senior Dietitian and Nutritionist, CARE Hospitals, Hi-Tec City, Hyderabad said, “Curry leaves have several health benefits. They are a rich source of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Curry leaves can help to improve digestion, reduce the risk of heart disease, and lower cholesterol levels. They are also beneficial for the health of the eyes, skin, and hair. Additionally, they can help in weight loss as they contain carbazole alkaloids, which have been shown to have anti-obesity properties. Additionally, curry leaves can help to improve digestion and metabolism, which can also aid in weight loss.”
While curry leaves are generally safe to consume, it is important to keep a few things in mind. Ansari shares them:
*Curry leaves should be washed thoroughly before consuming to remove any dirt or pesticides.
*They should be consumed in moderation, as they can have a bitter taste and can cause digestive issues in some people.
*Pregnant women and individuals with certain medical conditions should consult with a healthcare professional before consuming curry leaves or any other herbal remedies
