One popular method of incorporating corn silk into your diet is by preparing it as tea, which is hailed as a nutritious beverage.

Talking about the same, N Lakshmi, Senior Dietician, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad said, “Corn silk tea is a nutritious herbal infusion crafted from corn husks’ silky strands, usually discarded. It’s packed with medicinal benefits and offers a delicious and wholesome beverage option.”

Here are some of the health benefits of corn silk tea, according to the expert:

*Corn silk tea supports urinary health by acting as a diuretic, increasing urine production and reducing water retention. It aids in flushing out toxins from the urinary system.

*Preliminary studies suggest that corn silk tea may help regulate blood sugar levels, potentially benefiting individuals with diabetes. However, further research is necessary to establish its effectiveness in managing the condition.

*Corn silk is believed to support kidney health by preventing the formation of kidney stones and promoting overall kidney function.

*It contains antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and protects against free radical damage.

How is corn silk tea made?

Corn silk tea can be easily prepared and enjoyed in various ways. Sharing a recipe, N Lakshmi said that for a soothing tea, one can steep dried corn silk strands in boiling water for 10-15 minutes, then strain and sweeten it, if desired. “Create flavourful herbal blends by combining corn silk with herbs like chamomile or mint. Alternatively, obtain corn silk in tincture or extract form from health stores, following provided instructions for proper usage,” she said.

Concluding, the dietician said, “Individuals with corn allergies should exercise caution or refrain from consuming corn silk tea to avoid potential allergic reactions. It is recommended that those with a known sensitivity to corn avoid this beverage altogether to ensure their well-being and minimise the risk of any harmful effects.”
