Chhavi Mittal, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and successfully fought against the deadly disease, has now been diagnosed with costochondritis. “It’s an injury to the cartilage in the chest,” the 42-year-old revealed on Instagram.

Chhavi said that the “probable cause could be radiation (cancer treatment) or a side effect of the injection I took for osteopenia (a condition with low BMD) or it could be an incessant cough (which I had a few days back) or a combination of one or more or all.”

Opening up about her experience of dealing with the condition, the actor-producer shared, “I have pain while breathing, using my hand, or arm, lying down, sitting, laughing, or pretty much everything.”

However, Chhavi is keeping herself positive to fight the condition. “No, I’m not always positive about it, but I’m rarely negative. So, holding my chest in my hand, I went to the gym (my happiest place) because you know what? We all get knocked down, but do we get up again? Well, I do! For anyone who needs to hear this. I know you’re suffering in some way or the other.. but you’re not alone! And THIS TOO SHALL PASS,” she wrote.

According to Dr Amith Reddy, senior consultant, orthopaedic surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). “It can occur due to physical strain, excessive coughing, injury, infections, inflammatory conditions, and generalised wear and tear of the joint,” he said.

The expert added that costochondritis can affect any age group but people over 40 years of age are more prone to it. “People less than 40 are more prone to Tietze syndrome, which is also a kind of inflammation of the costochondral joints.”

Dr Vikas Chopra, senior consultant interventional cardiologist, Primus Super Speciality Hospital agreed and said that “costochondritis can affect people of all ages, but certain groups may be more susceptible to experiencing it.” These groups include:

* Individuals between the ages of 20 and 40 years old.
* People who engage in activities or jobs that involve frequent chest movements or repetitive motions.
* Those with existing inflammatory conditions or autoimmune disorders.

As for symptoms, they include costochondral joint pain, swelling, redness, and pain during coughing, movements after rest, getting up from the sleeping posture, or movement during sleep, Dr Reddy said.

How to manage?

Dr Chopra suggested following these measures:

*Rest: Avoid activities that worsen the pain or strain the chest area. Allow sufficient time for the affected area to heal.
*Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate the pain and reduce inflammation. Always consult a healthcare professional before taking any medication.
*Ice or heat application: Applying ice or a cold pack to the painful area may help reduce inflammation. Alternatively, warm compresses can provide relief and comfort.
*Posture: Maintaining good posture can reduce strain on the chest and ribcage, potentially easing discomfort.
*Breathing exercises: Learning and practising deep breathing techniques can help minimize the strain on the chest muscles and may alleviate pain.
*Physical therapy: A physical therapist can suggest specific exercises and stretches to strengthen the chest muscles and improve posture.
*Avoiding triggers: If an underlying condition like rheumatoid arthritis is causing costochondritis, managing that condition may help alleviate symptoms.
