Premani explained that sorbets are water-based and thus generally lower in calories and fats, making them a preferable choice for those mindful of their intake. (Source: Freepik)If you have a sweet tooth and need a decadent dessert to complete your meals, we shouldn’t be too wrong to assume your refrigerator is stocked with ice cream. Between flavours, toppings and textures, resisting this temptation is no easy feat, we admit.
But could indulging in this sweet treat daily increase your risk of heart attacks? indianexpress.com spoke with Vedika Premani, clinical dietician at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, to explore the link between ice cream consumption and heart health.
“Ice creams are usually high in saturated fatty acids and sugars, and excessive intake can raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes,” said Premani.
According to her, saturated fats can raise the LDL levels or the ‘bad cholesterol’ in the body, This can lead to atherosclerosis, and in turn, increases the chances of heart attacks and other cardiovascular issues.
If you want to enjoy ice cream regularly, Premani recommends consuming it in moderation throughout the week to reduce potential health risks.

With various formulations and textures such as gelatos and sorbets available in the market, it is easy to pick a low-fat option to indulge in. For weight watchers who are blissfully unaware, gelatos refer to ice creams that are made of milk and cream primarily, while sorbets are dairy-free and eggless options made of fruit purees and juices.
Premani explained that sorbets are water-based and thus generally lower in calories and fats, making them a preferable choice for those mindful of their intake.
“However, the best way to make an informed choice is by reading nutrition labels to understand the calorie, fat, and sugar content of each ice cream,” she advised.
“If made with fresh and controlled ingredients, ice creams can be made healthy by adding fruits, nuts, low-fat milk or yoghurt and seeds. Otherwise, traditional ice creams are high in fats, sugars and calories,” Premani said.
