Recovery after a C-section can be challenging for most women as movements become difficult. The abdominal incision and the surgical procedure can lead to discomfort and reduced mobility, requiring patience and gradual effort to regain strength and normal activity levels. Highlighting the same, Neha Marda — who gave birth to a baby girl earlier this year — shared that she had to undergo an emergency C-section and the recovery wasn’t easy.
As such, she followed certain movement tips that helped her immensely. The actor shared a step-by-step guide to get out of bed after a C-section delivery.
*When you are ready to get up, bend your knees and shift your shoulders away from the side you plan to exit. Bring your legs close to the edge of the bed, ensuring your body is in a diagonal position.
*With one swift motion, use your opposite arm and your upper body strength to roll onto your side. Hold this position for a second.
*When you are prepared, use your upper body strength to push yourself up into a seated position on the edge of the bed. Utilise your arms to keep your knees as close to the bed as possible.
*Once you are ready, lean forward from your hips, with your nose over your toes, and push with your hands to stand up.
“If the height of your bed is particularly high, use a step stool for some time,” Neha suggested. Take a look at the following video in which she can be seen demonstrating this step-by-step process.
Dr Rashmi Baliyan, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Consultant, Primus Super Speciality Hospital told indianexpress.com that these are excellent tips for women who have undergone a C-section and are in the process of post-operative recovery.
“Proper movement and getting out of bed safely are crucial during this period to prevent strain and discomfort,” she said, sharing her perspective on these tips.
*Positioning is key: The first tip emphasises the importance of positioning your body correctly before attempting to get out of bed. This is essential because it reduces the strain on your abdominal muscles, which can be particularly sensitive after a C-section.
*Rolling to the side: Rolling to your side, as described in the second tip, is a smart move. It minimises the strain on your abdominal incision and engages your upper body strength, which is important for a smooth transition.
*Seated position: The third step encourages coming to a seated position on the side of the bed. This helps you gradually engage your core muscles while providing additional support for your back and abdomen.
*Standing up: The fourth tip emphasises a forward-leaning motion when getting up. This is beneficial as it engages your leg muscles and minimises strain on your abdominal area. The use of your hands for support is also a good practice.
*Consider using a step stool: The mention of using a step stool for higher beds is a practical suggestion. It ensures that you can maintain proper posture and reduce the risk of overexertion when getting out of bed.
Adding, Dr Anusha Rao P, consultant Obstetrics and gynaecology, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad mentioned that it is important to allow the scar to heal after a C-section before you begin any vigorous exercise or heavy work.
She listed things to avoid in the first 6-8 weeks:
*Abdominal exercises such as twisting movements.
*Full sit-ups.
*Twisting with pulling and lifting action.
*Lifting anything heavier than your baby.
