Former model Maheep Kapoor opened up about the time her blood sugar level shot up to 700. In a conversation with husband and actor Sanjay Kapoor on the Netflix show Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, Maheep shared that she got diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes in March 2022, following which she once felt really unwell and called up Sanjay who was in Los Angeles at that time.
“You were lucky you were immediately hospitalised. I remember Shanaya was at Mannat (Shah Rukh Khan’s home). I said, you immediately leave. I was in touch with Kannu (nephew, Mohit Marwah) constantly. Kannu literally dragged you and put you in the car. If you hadn’t gone, you could’ve gone into a coma,” Sanjay recalled.
Maheep, in turn, shared that Mohit ‘saved her life’ as doctors told her she could’ve gone into organ failure. She added that her children were in shock. “I’ve not ever told you about the children (Shanaya, Jahaan) and how they dealt with the whole situation. I could see it on their faces when I woke up in the ICU, they were scared. You know, somewhere, with that happened with Sri (Sridevi) and Mona, it’s affected the kids so deeply, they were in shock.”
Notably, Sanjay’s brother Boney Kapoor’s first wife, Mona, died after battling cancer in 2012 while his second wife, Sridevi, had an accidental death in Dubai in 2018.
Sanjay also mentioned that he saw how Shanaya grew up in “those three days” when she took over phone calls, spoke to the doctors, and coordinated with the family while Maheep was hospitalised.
When the body is in a state of hyperglycemia (sugar is high), and the patient has prolonged high sugar levels, it can lead to severe complications such as diabetic retinopathy, kidney failure, neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, stroke, joint and bone problems, and teeth and gum infection. “Prolonged high blood sugar affects nerve endings and microcirculation over time, leading to symptoms like blurred vision or tingling sensations long before any acute emergency strikes. Hence, hyperglycemia is known to cause permanent damage to the body,” said Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai.

The symptoms of hyperglycemia are blurred vision, headache, frequent urination, and hunger. “If hyperglycemia is not treated at the right time, it can lead to diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA), wherein the lack of insulin and a high amount of ketones will make the blood acidic,” said Dr Agarwal.
According to Dr Agarwal, the impact is such that it can lead to coma and death. “The symptoms of ketoacidosis are nausea and vomiting, dehydration, abdominal pain, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and loss of consciousness,” said Dr Agarwal.
One can take insulin, if recommended by the doctor, eat a nutritious diet, exercise daily, and have medication to keep blood sugar levels in control and prevent hyperglycemia. “Monitor the blood sugar levels at regular intervals. One has to stay proactive when it comes to health and manage the blood sugar levels by following the advice of a doctor,” said Dr Agarwal.
