Gurmeet Choudhary is not only particular about his fitness but is also strict when it comes to his diet.

In a conversation with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their YouTube channel, Bharti TV, the Khamoshiyan actor shared that following a strict diet despite being a foodie has been tough. “I am a big foodie, and I had to give up on food. It has been a year and a half since I have eaten sugar, roti, rice, or even bread. It is not easy at all. You have to mentally prepare yourself for each role that you play.”

Sharing what he eats instead, Choudhary revealed, “I just had one kind of food for a year and half; only boiled stuff. It has no taste, but eventually, I started to find it tasty. Now, my appetite has become so that if I eat something unhealthy, it won’t suit me at all,” he told the hosts.

Intrigued, we decided to find out what happens to the body when you eat only bland food for a year?

Veena V, Chief Clinical Dietician, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, said that eating only boiled food for a year can have a diverse effect on the body, depending on the variety and balance in the diet.

“On the positive side, it reduces fat intake, aids digestion and helps in weight management by avoiding added oils. Boiling also makes the food easily digestible. On the other hand, a person may experience loss of nutrient due to consuming only boiled food, particularly vitamins such as B-complex and vitamin C which are water soluble, unless the boiled water is taken in as soup also,” she explained.

According to her, a lack of healthy fats may also lead to reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Proper planning and inclusion of variety of boiled vegetables, proteins and whole grains along with substitutes for healthy fats, are crucial to prevent long-term health issues.

Less fat intake: Boiling does not require the addition of any oils or fats to the food, therefore reducing calorie consumption and improving cardiovascular health.

Better Digestion: Boiled food is softer, hence easier to digest. It’s suitable for people with a sensitive digestive system.

Reduced Risk of Toxins: Boiling kills harmful bacteria, parasites and other toxins in the food, thereby reducing the risk of foodborne illness.

Weight Management: Boiled foods, especially vegetables and lean proteins, are naturally low in calorie, supporting weight loss or management.

However, Dt. Jayasree N S, Group Coordinator of Clinical Nutrition, KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum, said that consuming raw vegetables is more beneficial, as boiling can sometimes lead to the loss of micronutrients, and overboiling, in particular, may result in the loss of vitamins. To avoid this, she suggested consuming raw salads as they retain all the micronutrients and fibre that may be lost during boiling.
