Not only do they make for a classic addition to Latin-inspired dishes, but black beans are also flavourful and come packed with numerous nutrients. It is these qualities, along with their rich texture and nutty flavour, that has made them a staple across the globe. “But, Brazil is where black beans are primarily farmed,” said Manisha Chopra, a nutritionist and fitness expert, further listing the many benefits of this legume.

As such, let’s check out the many benefits of this wonder food:

*Support bone health

These creamy beans are chock-full of minerals. The nutritionist said, “Black beans provide a variety of nutrients that support the development and upkeep of bone strength and structure, including iron, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, and zinc,” adding that while iron and zinc play critical roles in preserving the strength and flexibility of bones and joints, calcium and phosphorus are essential for bone structure.

They also promote the growth and repair of other tissues including muscles, nerves, and blood cells.

*Manage blood pressure

Minimal salt intake is crucial for maintaining normal blood pressure. Stressing the same, Chopra said, “Naturally low in sodium, black beans also include magnesium, calcium and potassium which further help in lowering blood pressure.”

Help with diabetes

A study published in Nutrients found that participants exhibited a favourable glycemic response — lower blood sugars — after eating a meal of black beans and rice as compared to just eating rice alone. Another study found that black beans increase insulin sensitivity, in turn reducing insulin resistance throughout the body.

In a similar vein, the expert noted, “Black beans are low in fat and high in protein, fibre, other minerals, and vitamins that are all beneficial for controlling blood sugar levels and preventing diabetes.”

Improve gut health

Chopra said, “Black beans help to avoid constipation and encourage regularity for a healthy digestive tract since they are high in fibre,” adding that they act as food for the beneficial bacteria in the colon.

Moreover, black beans are high in specific type of fibre called prebiotics that are important for optimal gut health.

Weight loss

Dietary fibre is an important factor in weight loss and weight management by acting as a “bulking agent” in the digestive tract. Highlighting the same, Chopra mentioned that black beans, which are high in fibre, can reduce appetite by making you feel fuller for longer. “By lowering your calorie intake, black beans can aid in weight loss,” she said.
