Bipasha Basu reveals daughter Devi had surgery for ‘two holes in her heart’: know more about ventricular septal defect

Revealing more about the condition, Bipasha — who broke down in tears while talking about the condition — said, ” We didn’t even understand what a VSD is. It is a ventricular septal defect…We went through a crazy period. We didn’t discuss this with our family, we both were in a little bit of a blur. We wanted to celebrate but we were a little numb, me and Karan.”

Further, Bipasha shared how she prepared herself for the surgery while expressing that Karan was not initially ready. “The first five months have been very difficult for us. But Devi has been fabulous from day one. We were told that every month, we have to do a scan to know if it’s healing on its own. But with the kind of large hole that she had, we were told that it was doubtful, you will have to go through surgery. And the surgery is best done, when the child is three-months-old.”

“I remember the third month when we went for the scan, I pretty much did all the research, met surgeons, had been to hospitals, spoken to doctors, and I was kind of ready, Karan was not ready. I knew that she had to be okay and I knew that she will be okay. And she is okay now. But the tough decision was to get your child operated at the right place and at the right time.”

Bipasha also told Neha that Devi was in surgery for six hours, adding, that she “didn’t sleep for 40 days and 40 nights. I am not lying. I swear on God”.

She further shared that Devi is doing better now.

What is the condition of ventricular septal defect?

According to cardiologist Dr Pankaj Ramesh Batra (Batra Hospital and Medical Research Centre), holes in layman’s terms for conditions like Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the interatrial septum; Ventricular septal defect(VSD) which is the hole in the interventricular septum, and Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) which is a defect in the connection between the pulmonary artery and aorta.

Notably, two holes in the heart are not a special condition. “When we say somebody has a hole in the heart, a very good percentage of them have more than one hole in the heart. The symptoms are similar to a single hole in the heart. In fact, the cause, symptoms, and treatment of two holes in the heart are the same as a single hole in the heart,” said Dr Subhendu Mohanty, interventional cardiologist, Sharda Hospital, Noida.

Dr Mohanty said that the causes are mostly genetic. “It’s just a chance. Some people have this at birth. No specific cause,” he said.

“The most common symptom is breathlessness, recurrent lung infections (pneumonia), recurrent heart failure, failure to thrive and grow,” Dr Batra told indianexpress.com. “Because of the above symptoms, the baby is brought to the hospital/cardiologist. The diagnosis which is in the first year of life is based on examination and confirmed by doing an echocardiogram,” he added.

Dr Mohanty also mentioned that symptoms depend on size. “Small holes may have no symptoms at all. This with large holes has increased crying, breathing difficulty, difficulty in suckling milk, and poor growth,” said Dr Mohanty.

Treatment is medical management for stabilisation initially followed by surgery, mentioned Dr Batra. Dr Mohanty added that the condition is treatable completely by surgery. Smaller holes may close on their own without any surgery.
