Former VJ and actor Anusha Dandekar took to Instagram to share about undergoing a surgery to remove ovarian lumps. She said she was “lucky” that even though the recovery was “intense”, the doctors successfully removed all the lumps in her ovary.
Dandekar thanked her team of doctors for their continued support and care as she has been recovering. She also urged women to make sure they get annual tests done to check for any problems in their reproductive system.
“Just wanted to tell all the girls that are here reading this, to make sure you visit your gynaecologist once a year without fail to stay ahead of your health and safety, I’ve been doing that since I was 17 and that’s how I can be so grateful I’m recovering well today,” she said.

Dr Nivedita Jha, consultant obstetrician and gynecologist, Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital, Bangalore agreed with Dandekar’s assessment and said that everyone regardless of family history and their own health conditions can develop cysts or even ovarian cancer. “As there are no bars regarding who can get it, prevention must be the goal,” Dr Jha said.
But first, we must understand what ovarian lumps even are.
According to Dr Jha, lumps are a layman’s term for ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs in an ovary or on its surface. Ovaries are located on each side of the uterus in the pelvic region of the body and are part of the female reproductive system.
There are various types of ovarian cysts, some of which are normal. But to understand better, Dr Jha said to think of them in two categories: benign and malignant. While benign lumps may not be harmful, malignant ones are those that could become cancerous cysts.
“Most cysts found in ages below 50 i.e. pre-menopause are 90 per cent benign,” explained Dr Jha. But that doesn’t mean that they can be left as it is.
However, in some cases, a benign lump can be even 20 cm in size and can cause severe pain in your pelvis and stomach, according to Dr Jha. Such lumps can easily be removed by laparoscopic surgery, a minimally-invasive procedure, she added.
In both pre and post-menopausal women, cysts cause pain, vomiting, and abnormal bleeding. If you have any abnormal bleeding, you must immediately consult a healthcare professional, Dr Jha mentioned.
Dr Jha recommended getting an annual ultrasound of your pelvis, and breasts post the age of 25 to keep a check on your reproductive system, especially if you have a family history of female reproductive organ cancers or even anal and colon cancer.
The only way to beat this cancer is to get ultrasounds routinely, Dr Jha said.
