Ajay Devgn recently opened up about undergoing eye surgery following an injury on the set of his upcoming action film, Singham Again. On the latest episode of the reality show Bigg Boss 18, the actor told host and actor Salman Khan, “Do-teen mahine toh vision chali gayi thi (lost my vision for two-three months). I went through a little surgery also.”
What’s temporary vision loss, what are its causes, and how can it affect you?
Injury to the eye can also cause sudden vision loss, said Dr Vinit Banga, director of neurology and head of neuro intervention at Fortis Hospital, Faridabad. Depending on how serious the injury is, this could be temporary or permanent. “Treatment may vary accordingly,” he added.
Trauma can be due to a sharp object or a blunt force, said Dr Poonam Yadav, consultant, opthalmology, Manipal Hospital, Sarjapur, adding that sharp object injuries usually compromise the integrity of the eye globe or the orbital wall. “Blunt injuries usually will have an effect due to compression and increased pressure within the eyeball/orbit resulting in a temporary or permanent alteration of the structures involved,” said Dr Yadav.
Some causes of temporary visual compromise due to trauma would be:
*Globe rupture- resulting in deformity or dislodgement of the ocular structures requiring surgical correction.
*Haematoma or blood leak inside or around the eye– sometimes requiring surgical removal or cleaning up.
*Optic neuropathy– the nerve involved in vision is compressed or severed. The latter case cannot be reversed, but in the former case, if timely medical and surgical decompression is done, vision can be revived to a variable extent.
*Injury to the cornea (which is like a glass window of the eye)-corneal abrasions/ corneal opacities due to tear, which again take time to heal, and in some cases, surgical treatment may help improve the results.
*Collection of blood or fluids in the eye– again, it may take time to absorb and, in a few cases, may get better by surgical intervention.
*Involvement of the lens of the eye results in traumatic cataract/lens dislocation, which may also be surgically improved.
*Involvement of the retina (the layer where the image seen is focussed on)- may result in its detachment or tear- this too requires surgical correction.

A possible cause could also be optic neuritis or an inflammation of the optic nerve. “This condition can cause sudden blurred vision or vision loss in one eye, sometimes accompanied by pain during eye movement,” said Dr Banga.
Visual loss in patients due to injury is often accompanied by other neurological or systemic symptoms, such as headaches. “In case of trauma to the eye, it is best not to try to rub or wash the eye. Please do not try to instill any eyedrops/ointments. Keep the eye covered with a clean cloth and reach your nearest eye hospital as soon as possible,” said Dr Yadav.
When one’s vision is compromised, it is imperative to consult an eye specialist. “Finding the accurate treatment plan is crucial to understanding the precautions one can take. The doctor can help restore vision quality and prevent further vision loss by appropriate management,” said Dr Banga.
