In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become an inherent part of our daily lives. While it is normal to experience stress, chronic stress can have a harmful impact on our health and potentially lead to disorders.

One such disorder which manifests due to prolonged stress is adrenal fatigue. “It refers to a state of prolonged physical and mental stress that can potentially affect the function of the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce hormones such as cortisol, which play a vital role in managing stress, regulating metabolism, and maintaining energy levels. Adrenal fatigue is characterised by a sense of fatigue and exhaustion that persists even with adequate rest,” N Lakshmi, Senior Dietician, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad told indianexpress.com.

There are various causes, including chronic stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, excessive exercise and hormonal imbalances, which can lead to adrenal fatigue. “Prolonged exposure to physical or emotional stress strains the adrenal glands, leading to fatigue. Insufficient rest disrupts the body’s stress response, contributing to adrenal fatigue. Inadequate nutrition affects adrenal gland function and worsens symptoms. Overexertion and intense exercise without adequate recovery can also play a role. Additionally, imbalances in hormones like cortisol, estrogen, and progesterone can impact adrenal function, further contributing to adrenal fatigue,” said Lakshmi.

While maintaining your adrenal health includes stress reduction techniques, improving sleep quality and other lifestyle modifications, nutrition plays an equally or even more important part in supporting our adrenal glands. As such, Nutritionist Lovneet Batra took to Instagram to share “good and bad foods” for adrenal health.

Have a look.

Adding to this, Batra shared that all these foods are great options to incorporate alongside other treatment approaches to help you minimise your symptoms, balance your body and start feeling your best.
“Drinking plenty of water is also essential. That is because being dehydrated can further stress the adrenal glands and worsen symptom,” she said.

Lastly, incorporate omega-3 fatty acid sources like fatty fish, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts to support brain health and possess anti-inflammatory properties,” she said.

As for foods we should avoid, she said, “Limit or avoid caffeine as it disrupts sleep and worsens adrenal fatigue. Say no to refined sugars and processed foods for stable blood sugar and sustained energy. Cut down on high-sodium foods to reduce fluid retention and blood pressure. Avoid alcohol and excessive sugary drinks to preserve sleep and essential nutrients.”

Concluding, Lakshmi said, “Nutrition plays a crucial role in managing adrenal fatigue. These dietary strategies contribute to addressing adrenal fatigue effectively. These recommended dietary strategies contribute to addressing adrenal fatigue effectively.”
