Hokey Pokey ice cream review: It’s all about funky wordplay and an immersive experience

This Mumbai-based brand is much more than just funky wordplay. They specialise in customising ice cream creations by mixing different flavours on what they call a ‘cold stone slab’.

The road to Hauz Khas village is always disorienting. Traffic jams, screaming sign boards luring you to get drunk fast and cheap, shady salesmen murmuring ‘ladies night, ladies night’ through the week, loud music leaking out of pubs, and a steady stream of people roaming about listlessly. During one such hectic evening visit, I discovered an ice cream boutique on my way to a restobar. ‘Hokey Pokey’ read the sign board. The name piqued my curiosity.

As it turned out, this Mumbai-based brand is much more than just funky wordplay. They specialise in customising ice cream creations by mixing different flavours on what they call a ‘cold stone slab’, which is set at -23 degrees. You can choose from wide-ranging flavours such as the decadent ‘Double Chocolate Therapy’, ‘Mad King Alphonso’, ‘Knight in Armor’, ‘Chocolate Assassin’, ‘Live and Laugh Brownie Break, ‘Fussy French Vanilla’ among others.

But the best part? You can make your own creations! This is when you feel like a part of the experience. The boys behind the counter put up a great show, chopping and mixing their way through to create some quirky designs.

I tried one of their own creations called ‘Very Very Berry’, which is essentially strawberry ice cream garnished with generous lashings of sweet rainbow sprinkles, jujubes, gummy fruits and gems. The ice cream on the whole was light, flavourful, not-too-sweet, and well presented.

Their other highlight is the Double Chocolate Therapy. It’s a fine mixture of dark Belgian chocolate ice cream with brownie, dark chocolate fudge and Nutella. The ice cream is opulent in flavour with slight bitterness to it, but it’s well complimented by the soft-textured dark chocolate fudge. This one is quite obviously for dark chocolate fans. The company claims they only use natural ingredients and fresh fruit extracts. Their ice creams are also 100% eggless, which is good news for vegetarians.

And while you’re enjoying your creation, there’s something that you might completely miss at first: a separate kiosk with a television and headphones to watch documentary films. It’s a great effort to make the experience more inclusive and special.

But sometimes, it takes more than just good service and ambience to make an impression. The Hokey Pokey guys seem to have understood this well. Not only is the staff well-trained and courteous, they don’t hesitate going out of their way to make someone happy.

In this case, this little one, and his parents. And just as I was about to exit, the guy behind the counter offered me a napkin and it read “Get Stoned”. I laughed, and in one go, all the heavy distortion of a packed HKV faded away. I got what I was missing the most out of an experience for a long time: craziness!
