With winter setting in, our body needs a lot more nourishment from the inside. Apart from dietary tweaks, and incorporating physical activity, it is essential to not fall prey to seasonal health issues like cold, cough, and congestion. To help you out, there is amla or gooseberry.

While people love to have it in the form of pickles and murabba or candy, amla, also known as Aonla or Amlika, can be had raw, as a dried powder, or even as a healthy shot like Ayurvedic practitioner Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya prefers to have.

“This is fresh amla juice that I consume every day first thing in the morning during the winters (it’s my winter #healthshot),” said Dr Dixa in a post on Instagram.

Here’s the recipe for amla shot

Method

*Take 3 amlas, chop them, and add them to a grinder/small blender jar (without adding water).
*Grind it smooth, then put the smooth paste in a strainer, and press it smooth to extract the juice from it.

Here’s why Dr Dixa consumes it daily

*It helps me balance my thyroid and prevents hair fall (delays premature greying too), said Dr Dixa. *It also helps with acidity, bloating, or any other gastric issues. Patil described that amla supports digestive health, which can be compromised during the winter due to dietary changes. “It aids in maintaining a well-functioning digestive system,” said Patil.

*It helps reduce high sugar and cholesterol. “So it’s good for the heart. All the reason I love it more,” Dr Dixa mentioned.

*It’s highest in vitamin C which is a powerhouse of energy and immunity. “It also happens to be a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. It purifies blood and hence is great for all skin ailments,” said Dr Dixa.

Amla is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be particularly beneficial for respiratory health, helping to alleviate conditions such as coughs and sore throats, Patil added.

*It’s good for the eyes due to the presence of vitamin A in it.

*It also makes me feel a lot calmer too (vitamin C improves mood, lowers stress and anxiety symptoms),” said Dr Dixa.

*It can be used for weight loss and weight gain too, said Dr Dixa.

– Use it this way for weight gain: Take 1 tsp amla powder, mix it with 1 tsp ghee– consume it followed by sipping on lukewarm water after five mins.

– Use it this way for weight loss: In the amla shot, add 1 tsp honey and consume it every morning.

Dr Dixa further mentioned that if you’ve got any of these issues or just want to improve your skin, eyes, hair, and immunity, go ahead and have amla daily, especially during winter. “Amla shots in winter serve as a natural and nutritious way to bolster immunity, protect against seasonal ailments, nourish the skin, maintain respiratory health, and aid digestion – all of which are especially valuable during the cold, challenging winter months,” Patil said.

What to keep in mind?

Since amla is cooling in nature, people with coughs and colds should always consume it with honey. “Amla is sour (so people with joint pain should also avoid it as eating sour foods can trigger joint pain). Also, avoid it if it doesn’t suit you,” said Dr Dixa.
