Indian-American model and author Padma Lakshmi is a well-known cook and anchor for the hit reality TV show, Top Chef. The leggy lass recently appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to chat about her new book, Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir.
Apart from discussing her life with Indian author and ex-husband Salman Rushdie, Padma Lakshmi talked about the importance of food in her life and even showed DeGeneres how to make the popular yogurt rice dish (as she called it), Thayir Sadam, which would make any Tamilian heart swell with pride. The talk show host was asked to mix the rice and curd using her bare hands, much to everyone’s amusement and DeGeneres’ horror, who played along nevertheless.
The model’s version of Thayir Sadam, with all vegan ingredients for DeGeneeres, included a tadka of white lentils, black mustard seeds, asafoetida, green chillies in canola oil. The end result may have been a bit too hot for the talk show host, whose first reaction to a spoonful of Thayir Sadam was: Wow, that’s so good. And sooooo peppery,” immediately followed with repetitions of “So hot! So hot!”
