India is known for its diverse and vibrant culinary heritage, offering a wide variety of flavours that will tempt and tantalise the taste buds. Additionally, the country’s rich diversity of regional cuisines showcases a remarkable range of food flavours. From the fiery spices of North Indian cuisine to the tangy and aromatic flavours of South Indian dishes, each region has culinary traditions that are unique to them. So it was not surprising that US Ambassador in India, Eric Garcetti, set out to explore the same after taking over the position almost two months back.
The former Los Angeles Mayor wrote on Twitter, “From the bustling streets of LA to the colourful lanes of Delhi, my love of great food continues. I’m at Maharashtra Bhawan, eager to explore the fascinating flavours of India. Join me on this journey as I sample the essence of India, one state at a time. Where should I go next?”

Garcetti’s first stop was the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi where he indulged in a variety of local dishes from the state. “I am so excited to finally get on the road and explore India. We are here at the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi and I have three colleagues from the state who will tell me more about the dishes. Come inside as we sample India and Maharashtra.”
After starting his meal with a glass of refreshing kokum sharbat, he tried Mumbai’s most famous and beloved street delicacy, vada pav. “This is like a Mumbai slider,” Garcetti remarked. This was followed by trying sabudana khichdi.
The US Ambassador also relished bharli vangi, saoji mutton, aamras, roti, sol kadhi, puran poli, etc. “Aamras is like being able to have dessert in the middle of your meal,” he said. After devouring these mouthwatering food items, Garcetti said, “For my fourth course, I am going to have a nap.”
Sharing his experience of trying these varied Maharashtrian dishes, he concluded, “That meal was incredible. I think my favourite was saoji mutton. It was the most amazing dish. Like I was told, it’s a hidden recipe so you have to ask somebody to know how to make it. I can’t wait to be in Maharashtra and Gujarat.”
Several people took to the comment section to share food suggestions with Garcetti. “Come on over to Bangalore. I believe it has probably the widest variety of cuisines local, national, and foreign, you can find in India. And while it won’t compare to USDA Prime, we’ll get ya a pretty decent steak too,” a user tweeted.
Oh great when you visit Maharashtra don’t miss to taste sweet dish like Kharvas and Puran poli. from Bedekar sales shop in Fort Mumbai or from Aswad Upahar gruha in Dadar. pic.twitter.com/UxxWpYxSTw

Another wrote, “Sir, take it slow and go easy on that stomach. Please try the curd rice with pickle and onion. It is a great innovation from India and the second one after ‘zero’.”
