While there is no one potent food that can assure good health, turns out that the unusual combination of pineapple and ginger can definitely benefit you in many ways. “The combination of pineapple and ginger is often considered a superfood duo due to their complementary flavours and impressive health benefits,” said Kavita Devgan, dietician, and author.

Pineapple is rich in minerals and vitamins. “It increases your daily intake of vitamin B6, copper, thiamine, folate, potassium, magnesium, niacin, riboflavin, iron, and substantial levels of vitamin C and manganese,” said Dr Rohini Patil, MBBS and nutritionist, founder of Nutracy Lifestyle.

Additionally, one of the bioactive compounds found in ginger, gingerol, has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. “Ginger is a particularly useful treatment for nausea during seasickness and morning sickness. Ginger soothes the stomach and aids in the treatment of stomach problems. It also reduces muscle soreness caused due to activity and muscle pain,” said Dr Patil.

Here’s why this pairing is so effective and how one can incorporate it into their diet.

Health benefits

Balanced flavour profile

Ginger’s spice and pineapple’s sweetness combine to create a flavourful harmony that goes well with various foods and beverages.

Potent detox and debloating

Ginger and pineapple are both well-known for their ability to cleanse. “Together, they provide a potent detoxifying and debloating blend. Ginger has gingerols, which improve digestion and aid in the expulsion of gas, while pineapple has bromelain, an enzyme that promotes digestion and lessens bloating,” said Devgan.

Anti-inflammatory powerhouse

This combination is also a strong anti-inflammatory duo. “Pineapple’s bromelain and ginger’s gingerols work synergistically to reduce inflammation in the body, which can help alleviate symptoms of various inflammatory conditions,” said Devgan.

While Sushma PS, chief dietitian at Jindal Naturecure Institute, does not consider pineapple and ginger to be a “superfood” from a scientific perspective, she however said that “there is no doubting this combination is extremely nutrient-dense and provides a host of health advantages”.

“Pineapple and ginger are a great complement to any healthy diet since they may help with inflammation reduction, enhanced immunological response, and better digestion,” explained Sushma.

“The spicy, slightly pungent flavour of ginger combines nicely with the sweet and acidic taste of pineapple to create a delicious culinary experience, whether the two are used in  smoothies, juices, or savoury meals and salads,” shared Dr Patil.

According to Devgan, there are different ways to consume these two together.
