Should you have guava or guava leaves? (Photo: Freepik)
While fruits provide the much-needed nutrition, experts agree that certain fruit leaves, such as those of guava, have as much or even more nutrition that can help control blood sugar levels. As such, we decided to ask an expert which is better for blood sugar control. Dr. Narander Singla, lead consultant in internal medicine at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, listed the basic differences between the three and their effects on blood sugar levels.
Raw guava fruit:
– Guava fruit is relatively low on the glycemic index, making it a good option for people with diabetes.
– However, consuming large amounts of ripe guavas (more than half) may cause a spike in blood sugar levels, said Dr Singla.
Guava chaat:
– Guava chaat can be a healthy option if prepared with minimal added sugars and spices. “Be mindful of portion sizes and ingredients used, as excessive sugar or salt can negate the benefits,” said Dr Singla.

Guava leaves:
According to Dr Singla, guava leaves have been shown to have a positive impact on blood sugar levels due to their ability to inhibit glucose absorption in the intestine and stimulate insulin production. “You can consume guava leaves in the form of tea or extract,” said Dr Singla.
– Lowers blood sugar: Guava leaves have been found to reduce blood sugar levels in both animal and human studies.
– Improves insulin sensitivity: Guava leaves may help improve insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
– Antioxidant properties: Guava leaves are rich in antioxidants, which can help protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, said Dr Singla.
Precautions
– Consult with your healthcare provider before making any significant changes to your diet, especially if you have diabetes or other underlying health conditions.
– Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly to ensure that guava consumption is not adversely affecting your levels.
Dr Singla said for better blood sugar control, consider incorporating guava leaves into your diet. “Guava leaves may be a more effective option for blood sugar control due to their potential to inhibit glucose absorption and stimulate insulin production. However, raw guava fruit and guava chaat can also be part of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation,” said Dr Singla.
