“You know, on my cheat days I always have to order desserts first before actually my main meal ok.. and a lot of my friends find this super weird…so I just wanted to understand.. if this is just me or anyone of you also do this…” she captioned the post, which shows her all ready to dig into a dessert.
Is having dessert before a meal a good way to balance your cravings?
Negating that there are universally established guidelines stating that one should not indulge in desserts before meals, Dr Ushakiran Sisodia, registered dietician and clinical nutritionist, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai said that if one experiences a craving for sugars, having your dessert followed by your meals is not inherently detrimental, especially if you do not have conditions like diabetes, kidney issues, or heart disease.
“In my professional perspective, the decision to consume dessert before meals depends on a multitude of factors, including your physical activity level, age, and emotional state. The dietary balance to maintain would ideally be 65-69 per cent of your daily intake from carbohydrates, 12-15 grams of proteins, and the remaining intake from fats. Of course, there’s always room for personalised adjustments to these proportions, keeping in mind one’s individual needs and preferences,” said Dr Sisodia.
Ultimately, the choice to eat dessert before meals is an individual one, urged Dr Sisodia. “There’s no inherent harm in it as long as it doesn’t adversely affect your overall fitness and well-being. The key is to listen to your body and make mindful decisions about your dietary habits,” mentioned Dr Sisodia.
