Tonight’s a good night to have some Hawaiian pizza

The Hawaiian PizzaExpress (Rs655) is the star of the restaurant group’s new summer menu. And, it’s got sweet pineapple chutney (yes, you read that right), Speck ham, a bechamel sauce base and a subtle kick of chilli. What does it taste like? The pineapple chutney adds a tangy-sweet flavour to the pizza and the combination is, to say the least, interesting.

The food menu, though limited, impresses and is especially big on lamb and prawns. Chicken lovers would be satiated with Pollo Cajun (Rs595), roughly translated as Cajun-spiced chicken. With a base lined with Cajun sauce, topped with large juicy chunks of chicken, and a peppering of grilled peppers, the pizza is essentially complete. But, it’s the add-ons in Pollo Cajun that give it zing. Pollo Cajun benefits immensely from sun-dried tomatoes and hand-torn basil leaves. When all these ingredients come together, the burst of flavours is robust.

Gambero (Rs 705) — prawns marinated in Indian spices on a coriander passata base — is flavourful, and the prawns are well-cooked and soft. If you want the best of both Cajun and Gambero, go for Linguine Cajun Gambero (Rs 795) — a creamy, spicy linguine pasta with prawns, tossed with cajun sauce, mixed grilled pepper, sun-dried tomatoes and cajun seasoning.

The Hawaiian theme dominates the drink section. The Mango Fresca (Rs190)— a tangy and subtle blend of raw mango crush shaken with ice and garnished with green chilli — will take you back to your childhood, for it feels like a thicker, pulpier version of aam panna.

Other creative quaffs include Hawaiian Tikki (Rs355) — pineapple and orange juice shaken with nutty caramel syrup, a dash of lemon juice, passion fruit puree with chocolate sauce and rum — Guava Mary (Rs355) — guava juice shaken with a dash of tabasco, lime juice and vodka, with a twist of chaat masala — and, for those who don’t fear sugar overload, Tre Latteria Shake (Rs250) — three-dairy shake blended with bubble gum syrup, milk, cream and vanilla bean gelato. Overall, Pizza Express’ new Hawaiian-themed special summer menu is experimental and creative with an abundance of flavours.

The special summer menu is available at all PizzaExpress restaurants in Mumbai and Delhi till June 30.
