Olive oil, often referred to as “liquid gold,” is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and a symbol of good health. Its benefits go beyond enhancing the flavour of your dishes, as daily consumption of olive oil can have a profound impact on your overall well-being.
With the spectre of the festive season looming large over our heads, we’ve all started eating more oily foods. Whether you’re at your own home or visiting a friend’s home to “give them Diwali”, as the North Indians call it, we’re all eating much more oil-rich foods than we would usually. In such a situation, is it a good idea to switch to eating olive oil every day, instead of your regular oils and ghee?
Dr Sri Karan Uddesh Tanugula, general physician, Yashoda Hospitals, explained that olive oil is rich in polyphenols and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). “The former are antioxidants, which help in reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases. MUFA helps in reducing LDL cholesterol levels i.e. bad cholesterol levels thereby decreasing the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases.”
He also pointed to recent evidence that olive oil consumption may lead to decreased incidence of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Dr Somnath Gupta, consultant physician & diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, also concurred, adding that it also decreases the risk of heart disease.

According to Dr Tanugula, 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil per day along with a balanced diet would be helpful. “More than the required amounts would result in excess consumption of calories as olive oil is essentially a fat.”
Some individuals may have sensitivities or allergies to olive oil, so it’s essential to monitor for adverse reactions.
Dr Gupta explained that the health benefits of olive oil largely depend on its quality. “Extra virgin olive oil is the most beneficial, while lower-quality oils may not offer the same advantages.”
“People with specific health conditions, such as pancreatitis or gallbladder issues, should moderate their intake due to the high-fat content,” warned Dr Gupta.
